What it means to wear a sorority pin

The following excerpt was taken from a Sigma Kappa publication, Sigma Kappa Presents The Fraternity System Its History and Value June 1952.

"What is that small pin you see so proudly displayed on the blouse, sweater or dress of so many girls? Why do they wear it? Nearly every girl who wears one has been asked this question. What answer do they give? Some may say that it gives them a feeling of importance on their college campus. Others reply that they have a feeling of pride in the knowledge that they are in a large and successful organization with widespread membership, high ideals and definate programs. Still others will tell you that it gives a sense of 'belonging.'

A sorority pin is an emblem that portrays to people whatever the individual wearer's character is. It is not just being in a clique but living with many different people; working with them and helping them and one's self to become better citizens, not just in your own sorority - it begins there but it should broaden. When you can adjust to a small group it gives you courage to face and conquer new problems in larger circles in your college, your town, your state, country and in the world. The feeling that you are doing something worthwhile in helping others to lives so as to face the trying problems of daily affairs and to make the world we live in a better place for everyone is part of the basic desire of 'belonging.' Sororities contribute individually and as groups to this desire by helping our own members, communities and other countries through philanthropic projects."

Even though this was written in the early 1950's I think it's still very valid and applicable to the sorority system today. Just something to think about.

Please allow me to add my thanks to this wonderful message. So many members get blase about their sorority pins, and maybe something like this will change at least one young woman's perspective!

Thank you :)

I agree! It really makes you think about the importance and the values of your organization. Thank you so much for the insight :)
