GC Battle of the Sexes/Ages

Do you think men and women are treated differently on GC? Do you think that members that are older individuals (old as in age, not GC time) get away with more?

RedRoseSAI 01-19-2005 03:52 PM

I think everyone is treated equally.

Yes.

Yes............I actually have someone in mind that gets away with too much and HE has been for quite a while :( It's a damn shame.

This is gonna get ugly, but I'll bite.

Age: I do think sometimes older members are allowed a little more leeway. But I also think, in some instances, some should be allowed. I might cringe when I hear one of my 80 year old grandmothers make an offhand comment that's vaguely racist or sexist, but I know there's little I can do to change the way they think. As my mother told me years ago, you have to keep in mind the fact that they were raised in a different time. I'm not saying it's right, I'm just saying their manner of thinking may or may not align with what is currently PC.

Sex: Again, in some instances (and from my hippie feminist opinion), I think some posters are quick to dismiss women who argue with the majority or whom go against what is a societal norm. And that's all I'm going to say about that ;).

These are my opinions, take them or leave them if you will. Just remember that opinions are like a**holes-everybody has one :)

Play nice, y'all-this has the potential for an interesting debate, and I'd hate to see it marred by bitter bickering that we seem to engage in when issues such as these come up.

I think everyone is treated pretty equally, I mean, those who are bitchy are bitchy to everyone. They don't discriminate. :D

You know how I feel about this -- I've brought it up before. I think that men are given a lot more leeway on what they're allowed to say on GC, even if people are just kidding around. Of course, I think this is true of sororities and fraternities in general. Fraternity men are allowed to push limits much more than sorority women. That's all I'm going to say on that for now, but if we get some good discussion going I'll jump back in.

I also think that there are a number of posters who think that, because they (or their friends) are older than someone, they should be according more respect even when they don't act in a way that commands respect. I agree with Nikki in that I have lower expectations for older generations to match my opinions (the racist comments from grandmothers being much less offensive than when they come from my classmates/friends, etc.). But I also have higher expectations from them in terms of behavior -- for example, if a 20-year-old on this site calls somebody else a loser, I chalk that up to immaturity, but if a 60-year-old does it, I'm going to chalk that up to general asshat-ness.

There are some older posters on this website who conduct themselves in a dignified manner and deserve nothing but respect. There are few people on GC that I respect more than DeltAlum, for example. But there are also plenty of older posters that demand respect without doing anything to deserve it. And no, making derisive comments about "sororities at fake schools" or "how fraternity GPAs aren't what they used to be" (when at most schools, they are, in fact, better than they used to be) does not make you "a wealth of knowledge," nor does it excuse your disrespectful behavior.

I have a hard time deciphering people's usernames in order to determine gender. Even with letters you never know what sex someone is on here. Creepy but I just treat everyone as a hermaphrodite.

I honestly never noticed the gender thing....

Which means it's probably true.
