Things that piss you off about MLK day

Let me start out by saying I'm not in bad mood or anything and I'm not racist, so dont take this the wrong way.

I dont understand why banks are closed, the post office is closed, schools are closed and many insurance companies are closed today for MLK day. I don't think its right that everything shuts down for this guy when we get nothing for George Washington's birthday or Lincoln's birthday and FDR's birthday. We don't even get anything for Kennedy's birthday. What has this guy actually done that gives him the honor of having half the nation close down for him? Yes, what he stood and fought for was a noble cause....but Abe Lincoln, who abolished slavery, doesnt even get a day of his own. Lincoln was killed just like MLK. I just think MLK day puts the good Dr. King above many great leaders who did a lot more for this country than MLK did. If its all about civil rights leadership and those who pioneered it, why not give Malcom X, Dr. King and Medgar Evans a day for all three and not just MLK day? When you go to an all black neighborhood you dont find a Malcom Blvd or Evans drive, but you always see a road called MLK. If I was colored I'd be furious. What are some of your thoughts?

Perhaps you've heard of a holiday called President's Day?

Yea, but half the nation doesnt shut down for it.

ZTAngel 01-17-2005 10:20 AM

FYI, Lincoln's and Washington's birthday are a National holiday. Since their birthdays are so close in date, we celebrate it on just one day - President's Day.

I think you just opened a can of whoop ass. You have a valid question that is now going to be ignored because your post reeks of racism (for starters the ghetto street comment and the "colored" people comment).

ETA: My work shuts down for President's Day and that's good enough for me!!!! :D

Yes, they do. It's a Federal holiday. The banks close. Schools close. Private businesses can choose to close or stay open, just as they can on MLK day.

I don't have school on President's Day, either. Banks are closed, and I can't go to the post office.

So, pray tell...what is the problem here?

Its not racist. And I never remembered school being closed for president's day. The mall is still open on president's day but not on MLK day. Should I edit the post?

I never had president's day off at school. Never.

Palm Beach County never had off for President's Day? Are you sure? It's a Federal holiday which would mean that schools should have it off. Broward County had off for both MLK Day and President's Day.

UCF had off for just MLK Day.

And, yes, you should edit your post (such as the ghetto comment and the colored people comment).

Yes, what he stood and fought for was a noble cause....but Abe Lincoln, who abolished slavery, doesnt even get a day of his own. Lincoln was killed just like MLK. Could it be that Lincoln is white and there are already too many "white" holidays? Or could it be that a lot of colored people feel they deserve a day of their own and decided who better to claim a holiday for than MLK? If many colored people want a holiday, why not give them Kwanza? I just think MLK day puts the good Dr. King above many great leaders who did a lot more for this country than MLK did. If its all about civil rights leadership and those who pioneered it, why not give Malcom X, Dr. King and Medgar Evans a day for all three and not just MLK day? I'm furious that you call us colored.

Ah crap. The malls are closed today? I'm out of some makeup and was planning on running over there on my lunch break.

ETA: My work isn't closed for either President's Day or MLK Day, so we go from New Year's until Good Friday w/o a day off. :( I remember in college, we had off for MLK Day but not for President's Day.

did you have February and April vacation or March vacation?

if you had February/April vacation then the first day of February vacation was president's day, so you had off for it but just didn't realize it was a holiday.

that's how my school was.
