My Grandmother Always Warned Me...
This is so sad.
History of Dillard's escalator to unfold A lawsuit over a girl's injury t Dillard's takes on the history of a down escalator dome call the "meat grinder." By JAMIE THOMPSON Published January 11, 2005 -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- ST. PETERSBURG - On one of the busiest shopping days of the year, the Friday after Thanksgiving, a mother browsed the Dillard's at Tyrone Square Mall with her three children. As the Seminole family walked past the escalator, 5-year-old Kerriana Johnson stepped toward it. "Get away from the escalator," said the girl's mother, Lori Medvitz, according to court records. It was too late. The down escalator sucked off Kerriana's shoe without stopping. Kerriana instinctively reached down to retrieve her shoe, and her fingers got stuck, lawyers say. The cast aluminum steps, weighing 80-90 pounds, crushed down on Kerriana's hand and sliced off three of her fingers, according to court records detailing the incident on Nov. 29, 2002. After the escalator was shut off, police unscrewed steel panels to free Kerriana's hand. Link to article |
ok, it has to be said.
my favorite quote from mallrats: Listen, not a year goes by, not a year, that I don't hear about some escalator accident involving some bastard kid which could have easily been avoided had some parent--I don't care which one--but some parent conditioned him to fear and respect that escalator! |
How true!
I, because of a young and stupid idea when I was about 9 or 10, have a small scar on my right knee. Escalator teeth on my knee! Owch! Now, I always hold on to my little girl's hand when we get near one! |
i once got a shoe lace stuck in an escalator. it was shredded enough to convince me that jumping off ahead of time is not crazy, its cautious
|
I had my shoe lace caught in one, too. I was probably about 10 years old and I was freaking out because I thought the escalator was going to suck me under. My mom quickly pulled the shoe off my foot and then called someone from security over to stop the elevator so we could retrieve the shoe. My shoe laces looked like some rabid animal had mauled it. lyrica9, I also jump off the escalator early ever since that happened!

I HATE escalators! I've almost fallen down a few. I'm very cautious these days about them because of a few "almost" incidents.

I saved a woman in a train station who fell backwards down an escaltor. The look in her eyes was pure fright! I'm sure she thought she was going to die or be badly injured. She turned out fine, but lost a bunch of apples from her cart.

That poor little girl. :(
