phi beta kappa

Phi Beta Kappa, often called "Phi Bete" stands alone.
It was the first greek letter club, originally called the Flat Hat
Club....see Baird's or any encyclopedia or internet for more...
Phi Beta Kappa charters very selectively, and on a few campi
where scholarship reigns supreme. It is, in itself, a community
of scholars. Not all the money or endowment or pressure in the
world can buy a charter from Phi Bete. They still have the key
as a badge (so does KA Society) and this originally was used to
wind one's watch. I think Phi Bete was always co-ed, and likely
never had a house. It's the highest representation of achieved scholarship, the zenith. Recognized throughout America as the
pinnacle of collegiate awards, this key will open many doors. There is unlikely any college in the USA who would not "kill' to
be recognized and chartered by Phi Beta Kappa. Anyone who'd
disagree with this is either brain-dead or in denial.
I am not a member of PBK nor do I have the undergraduate gpa
to be one, nor did my Kansas State Teachers College have a charter...only KU in Kansas. Others have sought, none won....
Now this does not mean your collegiate experience is inferior, but
tell me of another measurement so widely acknowledged.
Those of you who are Phi Betes...wear your key, proudly.
But they do not have the bucks as Chi Psi, the numbers as Pike, the jocks like SAE, the parties as Tekes, the face men like Sig Ep,
the loyalty like Beta, and so on. But they are PHI BETA KAPPA.
They stand alone....and we all owe our existence to them and to
the Freemasons. Happy new year, whoever you are!

It was NOT originally called the Flat Hat Club. That was a different organization.

Also, your stereotypes are off the mark. Mostly because they are stereotypes.

stand corrected--

Thank you for correcting me on the origin of the Phi Beta Kappa
and the first GLO. The Flat Hat Club preceded PBK, and lived from
c1750 to c1770 and Phi Beta Kappa was not founded 'til 1776.
I did not have my Baird's handy and confused the two, a senior
moment...for sure

PhiPsiRuss, yes at a maturing age, E C and I have Brain Farts so to speak.

But enlighten yourself and correspond with Him Via PM, a lot of knowledge in that old cranium for both He and She Greek Organizations.

Your information is well taken.

What most people dont realize, is that there are people on Site Who will know or find things to post.

While you awhile back seemed to be a smart ass, have become a very viable part of G C!:)

Not to sound lik a jerk but....what was the point of that post, honestly? Basically that whole thing to me was about how none of other GLO's are as good as Phi Beta Kappa. Again, not to be mean or anything but I was just trying to figuire out what this was all about.

Phi Beta Sigma

The group actually began as a secret society comparable to Scroll and Key or Book and Snake Society out of Yale but eventually became the honorary academic organization it is today.

Dont worry about sounding like a jerk. Just go along for the ride and see many things that abound on GC!:D

As you should know, Phi Betta Kappa is considered the Cradle of Greek Dom.

Many things have changed over the years, PhiBK has become a Badge of Honor for the Bright kids who attain Good GPAs.

Most Greek Organizations tried to pattern themselves after PhiBK and also have morphed over the many years to today.

Considering that Phi Beta Kappa and the Flat Hat Club are mentioned during the pledge/AM/NM education process of just about every single NIC and NPC group, thats a very good question.

Great post and link, I saved it for future reference!:)

In a discussion last night, Yes N Y Eve, in talking with a Brother and Fellow GCer, I pointed out and have made mention, that All Greek Organizations Basically Started as Single Groups, Ergo, LOCALS!

So while We as Snob Greeks Profess We Are The Best, We are just a part of a bigger picture puzzel!

So, remember when These Greek Organizations were started back in yore, it is a far cry from what We have become!
