What is it like?
 

My name is Nik, and I live in Florida. I am not in college yet, so therefore i do not have any of the experiences you all are conversing about in your forums. But i have a pasion. And that is learning about Greece. Since the 6th grade, i have tried to teach myself the language, but because i was on my own, i didnt learn much.

I was wanting to know, what is it like to know the Greek language? For those of who that speak it. My father came over-seas to the U.S. from, Leopathes, Kerkyra. He could teach me the language, if he wasn't so stuck up.

What I'm trying to say is... Is there anyone out there, that is actually willing to help teach a 16 year old American kid, how to speak Greek? I am in the 10th grade now, and barely know anything but the alphabet.

First things first - welcome to the board. I think you may have confused the name with its purpose. While this is Greekchat, the "Greek" we're all talking about is Greek life (fraternities and sororities).

With that said, there may be someone here to help you. Also, you may want to check in your town and see if there are any Greek-American socieites that may be able to help.

i kno, and have known that this is a frat, sorority chat site, because of the way you have the forums labeled mainly. it isnt hard to tell. but i have looked into learnin greek in my town, we have a small town, and thr are no places to go for it. barely anyone here knows greek. about 50 miles away from where i live there is on tho, but i dont have the money to get a ride that far al the time.

Being Greek means we are in a sorority or a fraternity, like it was said earlier. But b/c we are in these greek organizations doesn't mean we actually know the Greek language or culture. IT's a total different thing. The only Greek I know is the Greek alphabet, which everyone has to memorize.. Sorry we can't help!

I suggest you look into taking Greek language lessons over the internet, or via a CD-ROM computer class. Try trolling around the internet and see what pops up.

Is there a local community college or any sort of university in your area? If there is, you might want to check their course listings to see if they offer classes in beginning Greek. Many community colleges are very inexpensive and offer beginning langauge classes. If there are any universities in your area, they would probably offer Greek too.
Otherwise, your best bet is probably to purchase some CD-ROMs with Greek langauge lessons on them.
