stereos?
Just moved into a new place and shopping for a new stereo...like an adult stereo. At first this was not going well at all bc I went to Best Buy with my dad after Christmas to look and it was a total c.f. -- and all they had were effing boom boxes and no one to tell me why I should buy what. Anyway I found this online at Sears and it's more of what I want -- and the price is less -- For a shelf system I thought I"d need to pay close to 8hundo -- but this is $399. Thoughts? Suggestions? Anyone else had luck at sears too? is this a good stereo you think?

1) Avoid shelf systems like the plague. There are a few exceptions to this, but they are way out of your price range.
2) Only buy a stereo system at a store that specializes in stereos, so don't buy one at Sears or Best Buy. 3) You can get a very nice stereo for $800. If I know where you live, I can recommend a reputable place. I spent 9 years in this industry, so I know it well. ETA I checked your profile, and saw that you are in the D.C. area. Try this place: Soundworks 10526 Connecticut Ave. Kensington, MD 20895 (301) 929-8600 |
well but I don't really want to spend 800 hundo. what brands do you recommend? thanks for the store help. I have actually had a lot of electronics luck at sears lately though -- there's one close to my new place so I started going more and they must have revamped their electronics dept -- it's way nice now.
If I don't go to Soundworks and want to stick with a frugal budget what brand would you recommend? thanks so much for your reply btw! |
Go on ebay.
I do like 95% of my shopping online-mostly on ebay. You can get great deals on stuff if you look around a little and have some patience. |
PhiPsiRuss -- you out there?
Coramoor -- thanks for the suggestion. I've never been good at eBay but am impressed with those that are! |
The least expensive way to get a decent system is to spend about $200-250 for speakers from a respected company like Energy or PSB. Add an inexpensive receiver from a company like NAD or Marantz. Do you already own a DVD player? That can be your CD player. Also, if you just listen to CDs, and not the radio, you can save a few bucks with an integrated amp (a receiver minus the radio.)
E-bay can work if you know what you're looking for. You can PM me, or post specific auctions and I'll let you know if its worthwhile. |
