Real World 16 - Austin, TX
'Real World' moseys to Texas
Typical for MTV to choose a major college town. The drama factor has definitely increased 200%. DC or Atlanta would have been good choices, I think. ...and they were considering "somewhere in Montana"? What the eff? |
At one point they were considering Tempe. I'm suprised they haven't yet considering ASU is "supposed" to be a "party school". Oh well.
|
there are a lot more factors than a town having a big university for them to choose that spot
they've been looking into Austin for a while.....it's a great city with a lot to do, plus it's a great music town. also, MTV typically looks for cities close to the water (ie: Hawaii, Miami, LA) but it's proving harder considering there arent many big citiies left. atlanta would be a poor choice......DC would be an excellent choice but with the way the alert level is there, i doubt MTV would want to be out there. i always thought Charleston, SC would be a great choice.....and whoever said Tempe is also a wonderful place but MTV likes warm climates.....they said they had problems filming in places like Chicago and NYC because the climate does restrict what they can do. i'm sorry but when its cold, i dont want to go outside |
I think Atlanta would be a great choice. But now that they're doing another southern city it will probably be awhile before they consider ATL again.
|
Hmm. Most who live in Texas - especially Austin - don't consider themselves Southerners.
Texans are Texans. The rest of the country can call themselves what they want. I learned this after living in Texas for 20 years... Austin will be great. You'll see. |
the comment in the article about the horse was really, really lame.
but i'm excited about the real world filming here in ol' austin. just insanely curious as to where they would be staying, 'cause i can't think of anywhere unique enough to be real world material... should be interesing, because not only is it a college and music town, but it's also a hippie liberal town....heh. |
the problem is that the Real World is starting to run out of cities to film the show in......if you notice, they're moving onto smaller cities....hell, i think Austin is probably one of the smallest cities (although it is pretty big but compared to other cities) they ever filmed in.
and with filming in random places like Montana, damn i would get so bored. if you're in the middle of nowhere, there's nothing really to do.....who would want to live out there? |

ETA: I should google these things before spouting them...looks like the DC thing is a long-running rumor. Oh well. I agree, it would be a good location, but Austin might be interesting... |

but my question is: had the producers looked at Dallas or Houston as well before they settled on Austin? |

I think that Austin is different from their usual locations but that's not necessarily a bad thing.
RW's been trying to get Austin for a while, but the city has never been too excited about the idea and has been making it difficult for them. The reason they would not do Dallas or Houston is because the Real World tends to choose "iconic" cities over simply big ones -- they like having shots of the city that they can intersperse with the action that set the scene (you know -- pictures of the strip, the Welcome to Las Vegas sign for the LV season, pictures of the Eiffel Tower for the Paris season). Houston or Dallas don't really have any equivalents. At least people know that Austin is a college town and has a great music scene so they can milk that. Also, I wouldn't be surprised if the RW set this up as a "RW: Texas" (a la Hawaii) rather than a "RW: Austin" and capitalized on the whole state's feel, rather than just Austin itself. I'm also surprised that the next season wasn't Atlanta. I think Atlanta and DC are on the way. |
I vote for Charlotte, NC.:D
|
i vote a big fat no for anywhere in North Carolina
i currently live in Wilmington and it's HORRIBLE dealing with actors and cameras everywhere. it's really bothersome. i know it does wonders for the economy but it's annoying when i would go out with my girls and 100 extra people would be at that specific bar because Chad Michael Murray and his fiance decided to make an appearance. i have to admit though, the Dawson's Creek people drew in a much bigger crowd |

I'm hyped to see Texas representing. MTV has done things in Austin before; Austin Stories, SXSW Music Festival (which will be going on while they are there) and X Games. A lot of the locals are real 'anti establishment' so it will be interesting to see how the 'corporate' cast & crew are accepted by them. I'm up there once a month or so partying, so I am sure I'll see the cast memebrs out and about. I love Austin. Its a GREAT town. |
