Kennedy Center Honors

Congratulations to Sigma Chi Warren Beatty (Northwestern '59), 2004 recipient of the Kennedy Center Honors.

Brother Beatty is a 1973 recipient of The Significant Sig award. One of Sigma Chi Fraternity's highest honors. The Significant Sig award recognizes "those alumni members whose achievements in their fields of endeavor have brought honor and prestige to the name of Sigma Chi."

Heather Headley's performance of "Your Song" for her tribute to Elton John gave me goosebumps. I love that song, and you could tell that even Sir Elton was somewhat moved.

But yay for Kid Rock getting Dubya and Laura to get up and dance.

Just splittin' hairs on ya, OTW... but Elton John actually was knighted under his real name - Sir Reginald Dwight KBE. (Same goes with Michael Caine - Sir Maurice Micklewhite KBE.) :D

Those Kennedy Center awards have got to be the ugliest looking medals on earth!

We don't have to recognize titles in the states. Its optional.

Ruby Dee, who was also honored that night, is a member of Delta Sigma Theta.

I always like the Kennedy Center Honors. The performances were wonderful. I didn't realize how many film scores John Williams had composed.

As a tangent, a family friend was one of the architects who helped design the Center, which was really cutting edge for the time. The behind the scenes stories that he told were pretty interesting.

Absolutely. Saw her in AIDA in NY. She is amazing. Obviously a great song as well.

Warren Beatty's a Sigma Chi?

I've been hearing about famous Sigma Chis for YEARS and never heard that one...I thought he was a Phi Delt actually...

Maybe I am just old--but was anyone else disturbed that Billy Joel sang "The B***H Is Back" in front of the President and the other distinguished guests? I guess with so many songs to choose from, I was wondering why he would choose that one???

It must just be that I am getting old.....

Joel probably didn't choose the music himself -- the show producers did.

Actually, the performance was recorded several weeks ago and there was a lot of controversy over whether it should be kept in the final product.

I suppose the producers decided that if the President didn't seem to object, that the FCC wouldn't take any action.

The taste in leaving it in the show is another debate that I don't care to get into.

However, I don't think "bitch" is one of the seven dirty words you can't say on television according to George Carlin.

Yep. Brother Beatty isn't as public regarding his membership and usually doesn't work it into conversation like say Brother Tom Selleck (Southern California '67) did recently in his 'A&E Biography'. However, I have heard Brother Beatty discuss it with Brother David Letterman (Ball State '69) on 'The Letterman Show'.

//end of the blatant name dropping//

It seems like Sigma Chi has many famous alumni in the entertainment industry. I think that Brad Pitt, Woody Harrelson, and John Wayne are brothers also. Not too shabby. :)

Heather17, I was also surprised about Billy Joel singing "The Bitch is Back" partially because of using the word bitch in the presence of the President and partially because I really don't think that it is one of Elton John's best songs. I agree that Heather Headley was incredible. I also thought that Fantasia was incredible. :)

FYI:

Brad Pitt (Missouri-Columbia ’86)
Woody Harrelson (Hannover ’83)
John Wayne (Southern California ’29)
