Hot, pretty, gorgeous or cute?
Inspired by the thread about handsome and such . . what do you mean when you use those terms?
|
Ok I'll go first.
I would say that pretty gorgeous and cute are degrees of the same category. A pretty girl is definitely someone that would be considered to be aesthetically and generally well above average. Pretty also has a lot to do with the face . . a pretty face. The body can vary, but not be so outside the norm that it detracts from the face. Gorgeous I think is a pretty girl with made up with the right hair, make-up and dress. Think Red Carpet. I am not sure there is any girl that I would call gorgeous that with no make-up, hair undone and in totally neutral clothing. Gorgeous is a package deal. Cute is a step down from pretty but still attractive. She can either be cute because she just isn't attractive enough to be pretty. Or she can be cute because something about her detracts from the total package. Lets say she has a really pretty face but is seriously over weight. The net result is being cute. Usually when a cute girl gets totally "done" she looks pretty. Hot When I think of hot I think of a girl that sends off a powerful sexual message. This can be because she has a straight out porn star body. Or because she knows how to dress to make it look like she has a porn star body. Hot is as much about sex appeal as anything else so she might not have a pretty face, and in some cases might be only borderline cute, but she is able to package herself to radiate sexuality. So the pretty, gorgeous cute category can be hot, but won't necessarily be. |

I've had this discussion with my family in years past:
Cute: A girl can be cute, but not pretty. She may grow into "pretty", but most likely not. Pretty: A girl who is pretty, will always be pretty. Those who start out, maybe not so good-looking, can develop into pretty women. Gorgeous: I don't know of anyone who is gorgeous. No way. Hot: Probably someone who looks good at first, but won't stay that way. |
I think...
Cute - Appealing face, possibly good body, bubbly and fun personality. Gorgeous - Beautiful face with classic features, great body, slightly aloof personality. Hot - Appealing face, killer body, sexy personality. Pretty - hmm...I'm having a hard time with this one. I would say that anyone who falls into these three categories would qualify as "pretty". |
Hot has more to do with sexuality than with natural beauty. Strippers are hot, but they aren't always pretty or cute. Some women are very hot, but not pretty.
Pretty is all about the physical features being aesthetically pleasing. High cheekbones, and large eyes are usually part of being pretty. Gorgeous is one step beyond pretty. High cheekbones and large eyes are mandatory. Again, this has nothing to do with personality or how she dresses. If she doesn't look extremely pretty when she rolls out of bed in the morning, without makeup, then she isn't gorgeous. Cute can be pretty, or just average physical features. Personality plays a role here, as well as how she presents herself. This one is the hardest to define. It like being "nice." |
I am going to reply to this because I use these terms for guys as well.
HOT - Is kinda the whole package...he is good looking and he has confidence, and all the things you find attractive in a guy. Pretty - Is usually a guy that spends more time looking in the mirror that I do. This is not a good thing. He probably uses conditioner, eye creme and spends more time on his hair, skin and nails than me. Metrosexual comes tomind...or a feminine pretty. I am generally not attracted to "pretty boys" gorgeous - Usually someone who I consider to be intimidating. Someone who is gorgeous is probably good looking but 0% personality. Someone I wouldn't want to date. Eye Candy only. Cute - Cute can mean many things...It can mean that have a very likeable personality. It can mean that that are fun to be around. Or it can just mean that they are cute. I generally date guys that I consider cute. Sometimes (not all the time) they may not be 'hot' but you love them anyway. |

I think pretty and cute can be the same girl. Mainly because I think I'm both, depending on my attitude and how I do my make-up. As a general rule, though, I think of pretty as a classic-looking girl, and cute as a very perky, peppy, cheerleader-type girl. I think of gorgeous as the girls who can compete in pageants. And for "hot" I agree with whoever said it was the kind of attractiveness that won't last. The girl with a great body and hair, but totally made up. I think any of the other three could be "hot" if using the right tools, but it's definitely the girl who looks completely different the next morning.

Because I am barely 5ft tall, I am always described as "cute", occassionally "pretty". Being so short everyone always tend to view me younger than I am. I've been called hot a few times. I don't think I will ever fall into the gorgeous category. Gorgeous girls are always taller than 5 ft.

Someone asked me about you, and I didn't use cute to describe you, I said beautiful. We're Norwegians, of COURSE we're good looking! When we go out people are intimidated by our hotness ;) You always have cute hair and purses though, so don't worry. |

Not only do I carry cute purses, I also usually wear shoes that add at least 2 inches. ;) Thanks BTW. |
For guys:
Hot: Jaw-dropping beauty - think like David. Only really confident. Being hot is effortless, edgy, intense. Handsome: Whereas hot is intense, being handsome is effortless and relaxed. Handsome is a sense of familiarity, like a classic charm. Confidence is also a must to be handsome. Cute: less confident on the whole but still smiley and dateable. Cute comes from being beauatiful or just below looks wise only these guys lack an intensity, edginess. or a relaxed nature. When I think of a cute guy, he's energetic. Disagree at will. :D |
