christmas trees

So I went out and bought the most beautiful Chrsitmas tree today and my husband hated it. He kept saying what a fire hazard it would be and then he started trimming branches off one side so it could go up in a corner. Of course he cut it way too close into the trunk, so then it tips over and he's like nope, can't have it. Just go get the artificial one out of the basement (which is like 2 feet tall) and use that one again this year.
I'm very upset. For the first time since we were married, I actually wanted a real tree, all beautifully decorated. My family is coming this year and i kinda wanted to "prove" to them how "grown-up" I am. I wanted a tree like we used to get when I was growing up. A real tree, but not a charlie brown type real tree, a nice one.
I'm still crying. I know I'm blowing this all totally out of porportion, but I hate how he's always like "I know what's best" and "In reality you need to do it this way." I'm so freaking sick of being literal and technological and such stuff. Please tell me other people in the world besides me think it is ok to get lost in a movie, and get lost in a book and earn a liberal arts degree and not have everyone have to agree with your narrow point of view all the time.
Sorry. I'm just venting.
I'm going to try again tommorow. I wasted 22 euros today that is now sitting out behind our town house useless.

Here's a hug, sweetie!

And yes, it's totally acceptable to get lost or swept up in a movie or book! I think they can change your life is you let them. And if not, just to dream away the hours is perfectly fine. Why, it's a needed break for our emotional psyche! Being literal all the time is no fun!

Holidays are hard to blend family traditions sometimes! If you want a real tree, then I think you deserve one. Go for it.

And I guess you answered my question- I was going to PM you to ask you if you were going home for Christmas b/c I was hoping to see you.

Love,
WeLiveForEachOther

I'm so happy that you're one of the gentle souls of life! We're the ones who keep the world "pretty" and "lovely"! Right now, your hubby doesn't realize it, but if you weren't there to keep his life sweet and gentle (including those nice, warm meals, cozy cuddles, etc), he'd be going out of his mind!!

((((((((((((((((((adpi*nurse)))))))))))))))))

Can't hug too much! Granted, I don't like live trees, but that's because of allergies. Does he have mildew or mold allergies? If not, ask him about the wonderful scent of pine that comes with the tree - doesn't that smell nice with the smell of cookies baking? Does that bring happy memories to him? What did his family do for Christmas?

Now, keeping that all in mind, you remind him that since it's YOUR family coming over for the holidays, you ALL will celebrate in a way that YOUR family finds appropriate! If he wants to opt out of the tree, tell him that he doesn't have to look at it.

Thank heavens that there's room in this world for those who can get lost in a book or a movie and create pleasure for others!!!

i'm so sorry to hear about what happened :( I think you should definitely talk to him like honeychile suggested. Also - I'm no marriage expert, but relationships are 2-way things... it can't just be how he wants it all the time! He can't always know what's best afterall! I agree with WLFEO -- you deserve a nice tree! I don't think you're really asking for a lot - just a tree that's nice and decorated ... something that won't even be up more than a month! There are also lots of precautions you and your husband can take (like not leaving open flames next to the tree for example :)) to prevent it from being a fire hazard!

Hugs

I agree. I know my husband is exactly the same as it sounds like your husband is. He is always the one who tells me what he thinks is the right way to do this and that. He is an engineer and very analytical. I agree you need to talk to him, but also you need to be you. A marriage is between two people, not just one, so he cant always have his way.

I guess Im just bossy and EXTREMELY stubborn because I find most times I go against what my husband says and do what I want. He is so used to it by now, he doesnt care. If it ever goes wrong though, boy he lets me know it lol....

Like everyone said, talk to him about it and dont back down just because he thinks he knows whats best. If you really want something, fight for it. We all want our homes to look beautiful for Christmas and you should be allowed to decorate esp when your family is coming to visit.

Good luck. I know I am the same way very romantic and dreamy and I always get caught up in that way, but it balances out my hubby who always thinks with numbers and lines and junk lol....

Thank you everyone for your understanding, advice and long distance hugs. I really appreciate how much sisterhood extends even around the world and on the internet.
I did speak with my hubby and we compromised. I bought a slightly smaller tree. It's still real and it's not Charlie Brown-ish. We're both happy with the results. Here's a picture:
