Jobs that help pay back student loans
 
I overheard some students in class talking about getting jobs after college that help to pay back student loans. Does anybody know about these types of jobs? What are they? I'm really interested being that I have $80,000 to pay back.:rolleyes: :rolleyes:

If anyone knows let me know too! I owe about the same amount and it's definately not gonna come from a job in my field! Some people I know that work in my agency work TWO full-time jobs to pay off loans but I don't think I could do that. I am not willing to give up my free time and my sanity either. It just isn't worth it to me. If I am going to have any debt, it may as well be from student loans.

I know there are some Federal Jobs that will pay back student loans (I think up to $40,000 - could be wrong on that figure though). Also some teaching positions. They must be in critical needs areas and/or critical needs schools. You would have to check with the DOE to find out what is defined as critical needs as it changes. Teaching I believe pays student loans at $5000/year up to a certain amount. I also think you have to commit to a certain amount of time...

I think Texas had some kind of program like that for college grads who worked as teachers in critical needs schools. I'm not sure if it is still going on b/c my roomie - who is an education major - has said that the state isn't participating in it anymore because of the lack of state $$.

AmeriCorps provides $ 4700 a year to pay back your loans (or pay for more school, if you want). I don't know how many years you can do it. Also, I believe the peace corps grants money for student loans (and may also pay your interest, while you serve).
However, unless you are really interested in these fields. I really don't think it is such a great idea to just take a job to help with your student loans.
Have you considered the various forms of financing available? Remember right now if you consolidate your loans you can lock in a super low interest rate (like as little as 3%). If you can get a low rate, it literally doesn't make sense to pay the loans back early (like if you can get a 5% or higher return on your money). Also, now with consolidation you can get up to 30 years to pay the money back (instead of the traditional 10) which really lowers your monthly payment. You can even set it up so that you pay a lower amount now and pay more per month later (when you are presumably going to be making more money). Sorry, I don't want to seem like "loan-girl" or anything, but it really helps if you know about your loans. A lot of times creative financing can help you keep your dream job and your sanity.
