Importance of Legacy status?
I was reading the thread on Rush stories and one of them indicated (for an NPC sorority) than the sorority needed permission from their (inter)national Headquarters to avoid giving a bid to a legacy. Is this standard for the NPC sororities?
How important are legacies for the NIC fraternities? For the NPHC fraternities and sororities? I'm an alumnus of Alpha Phi Omega (co-ed service fraternity) and if someone who wants to pledge is a legacy, we treat it as interesting but nothing more. In fact one chapter I know had a legacy who didn't even mention it until her father and uncle showed up for the initiation with brotherhood cards in their wallets. |
Membership selection is widely regarded as Ritual, but here is our National Legacy Policy.

Legacy policies vary slightly among NPC sororities, but in general, when a legacy to XYZ Sorority comes through formal recruitment, XYZ must invite her back to the first invitational round. If she attends XYZ's preference party, she must be on their first bid list. But XYZ can release her between the first invitational round and the pref round... the exact whys and hows would be privileged information, but a chapter doesn't have to bid someone totally unsuitable just because her sister/mother/grandmother/aunt/pot-bellied pig is a member.

At some campuses it would be impossible to give every legacy a bid as there are often more legacies than spaces available in a new member class. For example, ZTA is huge in TX. You could fill up an entire new member class with legacies and still have several dozen left over. It's just not practical. |

Does the concept of "legacy" exist in NPHC sororities? |
OK, to switch it, does anyone know of any of the NPC sororities where legacy status is largely irrelevant?
It seems in order of relevancy to go NPC Sororities, NPHC Sororities, NPHC Fraternities, and NIC Fraternities considerably lower than the first 3. Does anyone know of an NIC fraternity that cares (officially) about legacy status? Randy |
All NPC's have policies for legacies. Now whether or not that status is relevant really depends on the school and the recruitment environment. For example- at my school, while you do have to list your legacy orgs on your application, it really won't affect the house you join very much because every house only has maybe 1-3 legacies. And half of the time, the legacies end up NOT joining their legacy group.
As opposed to a school like UF-where having a legacy tie can mean the difference between getting a bid and being cut b/c everyone at rush has alumnae recs, but the ones who stand out are written for legacies. |
