December 6th, 1989--Montreal Massacre
Today is the 15th Anniversary of the Montreal Massacre. There are memorial services all over Canada.

I remembered that day...I had just gotten home from writing my exams before the Christmas break. It really was shocking and is still shocking. It's basically Canada's Columbine.

Honestly, I don't really remember the incident. I remember having memorial services at my elementary school and at highschool, but the initial incident I don't remember.
Either way, it is a terrible tragedy. |
I was in Grade 5 when it happened. My teacher didn't say too much about it. I'm not sure if it was because he thought the split 5/6 class was too young to understand, or if it was because he was not comfortable talking about it. We did get an announcement by the principal, and I remember memorial services in the years following.

I remember as well - I was in university in class and our sociology professor came in just shaking and crying - it was really traumatic for everyone, especially as most of the women who died were my age.
Most would have been between 32 and 35 now - In 15 years, these women would have done so many things like graduate, get married (divorced!), had children, had jobs they loved, and still be with their families. I wear my white ribbon with pride and rememberance, and hope of the end of violence against women. Quote:
