Woeful Canucks unable to mount a decent protest

Born to Be Mild (from Opinion Journal)
President Bush is in Canada, of all places, and Toronto's Globe and Mail on Saturday ran a story warning that anti-American "protesters" were going to get violent. It doesn't seem to be happening. Agence France-Presse reports from Ottawa (that's the capital) that "journalists outnumbered demonstrators" at the early demos:

The first demonstration--of Palestinians and sympathisers of the Palestinian cause opposed to Washington's support of Israel--attracted less [sic] than 40 demonstrators.

According to a quick head count by journalists, the protest attracted 39 demonstrators, 42 journalists and television crew members and three police officers.

"A few thousand" did show up later at Ottawa's City Hall, according to the Associated Press, but it doesn't seem to have been violent or even interesting. They held up signs calling the president a "war criminal" and an "assassin." Lawrence Wueft, a 60-year-old sculptor from New Brunswick (up by Maine), held a sign that said, "Bush go home." And you know, he probably will.

Well, maybe Canadians are just polite. Or maybe they had better things to do. Like go to work.

See...no one cared that he was here.

I think I mentioned this in another thread.

Next story please.

The press seems to be pretty fixated on describing how Canada and the US have grown so far apart.

So, does this mean that a protest has to turn violent or resort to civil disobedience to be "interesting?"

Killarney Rose may have it right. Maybe the Canadians are just more polite.

The International Editor from the Globe and Mail had some very interesting comments on NPR yesterday -- but sharing them would just start a flame war.

Suffice it to say that Canada and the US simply have some fairly major disagreements.

We are more polite... after all the first protest sign Bush saw was a large sign saying "Please Go Home"... and Bush was polite too... he thank us for "waving at him with all five fingers". :D

It must be tough since he can't demand that everyone have an admission ticket and be Republican.

The Protestors were NOT as violent..but if you ever think it might be cool to have President Bush visit your city well (with all due respect to the President) its a pain in the ASS! LOL I live in Ottawa and you couldn't get ANYWHERE!! Everything was blocked or detoured..and the protestors clogged up traffic.. I know security security..yeah we may be focused on getting to work but it was just about impossible to GET to work.

On another subject, I just wanted to say how disgusted I am with the American media's coverage..fox news is quoted as saying that they are "disgusted" with Canadians and CNN could ONLY focus on the protestors and our so called TERRIBLE and CHILLY reception and friendship between the two countries..talked about bias coverage..well at least the US journalists got their flu vaccine.lol they were crowding Ottawa Clinics for them.

When I was Director of Production Services at the former TCI National Digital Television Center, President Clinton did a major policy speech from our building when the G-8 was in Denver.

It was actually pretty funny to watch, because besides me, the top management team had probably worked/televised a couple hundred presidential events -- but the younger people who worked the studios and master controls just absolutely freaked out because they had to park in different lots and couldn't use certain hallways in the building.

One guy actually asked me what to do if he wanted to walk down a hallway and a Secret Service Agent told him not to. Unbelievable. Those guys have guns and a very limited sense of humor.

"If the Germans are bombing, the Allies duck... if the British are bombing the Germans duck... if the Yanks are bombing everyone better duck..."

On another note... what the hell is up with Fox... hello GWB was THANKING the Canadians for sheltering Americans following 9/11.... and CNN what th f*ck is the deal with your problems getting spelling and facts straight about Ottawa?

Why don't you show us these quotes since you're so disgusted and you know how they are "quoted".

Anyone else enjoy the irony of GWB's thank-you visit to Halifax?

The fact that the people he was thanking for opening their homes & hearts, where out protesting against him was pretty classic...

I also enjoyed the silence that greeted him when he tried to defend his policy of pre-emptive war by quoting M. King.... um the Nazi actually where attacking countries... Iraq wasn't...
