Tyrone Willingham fired

http://sports.espn.go.com/ncf/news/story?id=1935138

A bit confusing, considering the success he's had in North Bend, not just on the field but in recruiting. Anyone else think this isn't the right move?

Steeltrap 11-30-2004 03:41 PM

I also question this. But apparently Notre Dame is hot for Urban Meyer and wants to strike at him before Florida AD Jeremy Foley (sic?) gets his hands on UM.

Notre dame's problems are endemic, and have nothing to do with the coach. Willingham will be a hot commodity - and for good reason.

He might be the best recruiting coach alive . . . why not give him time to bring his own players through the system?

Terrible move, especially if they bring in Urban Meyer . . . I mean, Utah's been solid, but are they really any better than Willingham's Stanford teams were?

I HATE the race card . . . but this reeks of the ND good ol' boy network. Just saying, is all.

DeltaSigStan 11-30-2004 04:03 PM

I don't attribute it to the old-boys network so much as the incredible miopia that many Notre Dame faithful like Paul Hornung (sp?) and others who feel Notre Dame is still ranked among the top programs in the country. I know one of the three pillars of ND is the success of the football team, but I think was the wrong move. I thought they should have kept him on for another year, but I'm no AD.

Plus, he's on the market......ever thought of coming to SDSU?

Didn't think so....:(

Thrillhouse 11-30-2004 11:10 PM

I question the move as well because Notre Dame isn't what it used to be and there is no way they can be a BCS team every year. I know Meyer have serious interest in the job but I don't think Notre Dame as a whole would be happy with any coach right now. You have a shot to win a national title at any major school now and I wouldn't want that kind of pressure of coaching at ND.

Were a pretty die hard norte dame family and my dad said if you cant beat USC in three yrs running he has every right to get canned!

TriDeltaGal 12-01-2004 02:08 AM

I was talking to my educational psychology professor (USC alum) about this today. He thinks that Karl Dorrell (UCLA coach) is the next to go.

This made me a little disappointed in UCLA... it seems colleges don't really give chances to coaches anymore. I mean Dorrell has only been at UCLA for two years, geez, he's still working with Toledo's recruited players.

With Butch Davis now free of his obligations to the Browns, I could see him ending up at Florida. He's had success in the state before (at U. of Miami) and is a good college coach.

I really can't understand the fascination with Urban Meyer, if this was indeed the reason for the firing. Yes he's had success at Utah and Bowling Green, and yes he was a Notre Dame assistant. However, Willingham was having solid success on the field and off it with his recruiting; I just don't see how Meyer could be that much of an improvement.

Maybe Willingham will end up at Pitt after our AD gets rid of Walt Harris ( :( )

And the game of musical coaches continues...

ND might not ever beat USC again, at this rate.

DeltAlum 12-01-2004 11:04 AM

Hey, they've got to win more games or NBC will cancel their contract.

blueGBI 12-01-2004 12:08 PM

Hey, Tyrone! Wait a year and you can come to Penn State!

*wishful thinking, I know.

Will y'all still do the "JoePa-Terno!" yell then? :D

Kidding. My lil sis did her grad school at PSU and after visitin her a couple times i became a fan of State.

I do think JoePa sticking around for another season might end up hurting more in the long run then previously thought. If they're looking to replace him from the outside this is the offseason to do it. There are plenty of big-name coaches available and PSU has always got to be considered an above-average attractive job. In the heart of great recruiting country, play in a big time conference, tons of tradtion, etc. If they wait til after next year, there might not be such an attractive group to choose from.

As much as i like State College, that flight over the Nittany mountains into that small-ass airport is something that took years off my life :D

With the Pete Carroll/Norm Chow combo running things, I'm not sure anyone can beat USC three years running at this point (unless you can put up around 40-50 points against them).

ND didn't give Willingham enough time. I'm sure He'll find another spot soon.
