MILWAUKEE - A radio talk show host drew criticism Thursday after calling Condoleezza Rice an “Aunt Jemima” and saying she isn’t competent to be secretary of state.

John Sylvester, the program director and morning personality on WTDY-AM in Madison, said in a phone interview Thursday that he used the term on Wednesday’s show to describe Rice and other blacks as having only a subservient role in the Bush administration.

Rice has served as President Bush’s national security adviser and was named this week to replace the departing Colin Powell as secretary of state.

Sylvester, who is white, also referred to Powell as an “Uncle Tom” — a contemptuous term for a black whose behavior toward whites is regarded as fawning or servile.

He said Thursday night that he was referring to remarks by singer and civil rights activist Harry Belafonte that the price of admittance for blacks to the Bush White House was subservience.
As for Rice, “they’re using her for an illusion of inclusion,” he said, adding that he feels her history as national security adviser showed a lack of competence.

Take note of what the pres. of the NAACP, Kweisi Mfume says about Condi Rice. It should surprise those who like to think that the NAACP, black people in general and the Democrats only want to praise black people who "are not" republicans.

Conversely, is it okay when liberal radio hosts make racist comments, because, its okay, they voted for Kerry? :eek:

I think that Condoleezza Rice is a strong and very intelligent woman. They same goes for Colin Powell. I do not think that the radio show host should have made those comments.

I may not be a fan of Bush but I do give people the respect that they deserve.

Black or white Condoleezza Rice is a very strong and very smart woman........ i agree same goes for colin powell. It is not a black or white issue. these two have exhibit some very strong leadership skills and very deep intellect of the issues at hand.

I dont see joe smo up there with a HS diploma being national security advisor or sec of state ...it takes serious intellect not the color of yoru skin to hold that high of an office.

I really dont think Condi Rice is the token black in a cabinent position. She was Cabinent Member for the NSC. That is not a position to be taken lightly by any means.
