Two Girls Accused of Serving Poisoned Cake
 

MARIETTA, Ga. - Two seventh-grade girls were arrested on charges that they served poisoned cake at their middle school cafeteria to about a dozen students who became ill and had to be taken to the hospital.



Lawyers for the girls said the cake was a prank, and that they had no intention to harm anyone. Lab tests showed the icing on the cornbread cake contained an expired prescription drug, bleach, clay and tabasco sauce.


"They took it into the cafeteria at lunch time and began passing it out to students, just whoever would take a piece," said Jay Dillon, spokesman for the Cobb County School District in suburban Atlanta.


Some of the students started vomiting after eating the cake, officials said. Eleven of the students, mostly seventh graders, were treated at a hospital and released, Dillon said.


"There was some hysteria, from what I understand," Detective Dwayne Delk said.


The 13-year-old girls appeared Wednesday before a Juvenile Court judge who refused their attorneys' request to allow them to go home. The judge will reconsider the request on Friday.


Police said one of the teens was charged with 12 counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit murder, among other charges. The other girl was charged with the same 12 aggravated assault charges.


In addition to the charges, Dillon said the girls will be suspended and could be expelled.

Crazy stuff in Marietta. People finally stopped talking about the drunk guy that decapitated his buddy while driving down the road and not realizing it, now this.

I guess we're lucky in IA- we've only had kids arrested for selling hash-brownies in their high school.

what would motivate someone to do that??

Okay, seriously, were these girls mentally challeneged then? How could you not know by the age of 12 that Bleach can kill you if ingested? There's a reason why the bottle as a warning label.

if those kids didn't spit out the cake right away, they deserved to get sick. except for the ones who ate clay as younger children. i remember seeing other kids eat crayons, paste, and putty in elementary school. they all turned out to be nice kids, but charging a 13-yr-old girl with 12 counts of aggravated assault with intent to commit murder is ridiculous.

a friend and i put ex-lax on some brownies at our 8th grade dance. the principal threatened suspension, but he was a dick.

I disagree. And some of your comments are completely uncalled for, not all girls are bulemic as you seem to think.
If they put only the tabasco and even clay I could see as a prank. Yes, that is just nasty, and really won't hurt you. Once you start putting bleach and prescription drugs into the mix then you're asking for trouble. These girls knew what they were doing and deserved to punished. I don't know if 12 counts of attempted murder and aggravated assault is really necessary, but they definitly deserve to be punished. Maybe a nice ass whopping from some one would suffice...they obviously have no parental guidence at home.

I heard that. The father of one girl who poisoned them apologized. He said that he had been seeking help for his daughter who has Asperger's Syndrome, but the school didn't help her. A.S. is a high functioning autism related condition without the intellectual impairment, but with development and social deficiencies.

It seems to me that this girl really didn't understand the implications and consequences of her behavior. The father was very sorry for the entire incident.

When I was teaching, I had several students with Asperger's. We always had to watch out for them; whenever other students asked the AS kids to do something, the AS kids thought that their fellow students were "trying to be friends" (as one of my AS students put it). The AS kids have a problem understanding the difference between right and wrong. They're aware of their differences, and at the age that these girls were, there is a certain amount of wanting to fit in. So in this situation, I'd look into the AS girl's partner in crime. My bet is that it was her idea.

??? I just read in the Atlanta newspaper that the girl with Asperger's is still in custody but they released the other one because she had no history of discipline problems and was a cheerleader. What on earth does the cheerleading have to do with the vicious act she just helped commit?

Maybe it is The Weak feeling a need to just follow?

My understanding of AS is that people with the disorder are "weird" or awkward (they say that a lot of people we call "geeks" have AS). Some really want to make friends, but are unable to, because they feel that the entire world is against them. Most people with AS have average to above average intelligence, but also have "selective learning", meaning that they will concentrate on something that really interests them, but would put off anything that they find boring (though that happens to non-AS people too). They can also be very obsessed with topics of their interest, and may go on and on about it, not knowing that the other person or people aren't as interested in it as they are. Having AS doesn't necessarily mean that they're going to go out to hurt people. Just thought that I'd say that.

I just opened tonight's paper and it said that a student at West Georgia (about an hour from Atlanta) was charged with pouring bleach into her roommates' drinks. They all lived off-campus and had just had a big fight. One had to go to the ER.
