Forums for Schools

I know somebody has probably brought this up before, but I tried searching and e-mailing and got nothing, so I'm going to ask on a post anyways. There are forums for individual GLOs, why not for schools as well? My whole reason for getting on this forum was to get more involved with my greek community (after searching for something online, found this site and found there were UCF people). I want to talk to other people about issues that concern our campus, but I don't want to take up other peoples time or energy with things they don't want to read about.

I'm not saying every school in the U.S. should get one, but if 10 or 20 people from one campus e-mail an administrator to get one, then maybe it can be created? I think this would be a great way to foster greek unity on campuses, something I'm sure is one of the goals of this site.

Do you know how many campuses are represented here on GC?

There simply isn't enough room. GC has had problems with the server crashing just by what we already have.

If people are interested in school forums, I think other avenues would be more appropriate -- LJ, MSN Groups, for example.

I understand that, but the reason why this forum would be better is because it is all inclusive. You don't have to know somebody to get in. The whole point is get to know people you haven't met before and get their viewpoints on various topics. This is such a large site that it would be easier for people to find etc.

If the server can't handle it, then the server can't handle it I guess.

But I think you might find that it would actually streamline the site and make it easier to search for subjects, instead of getting repeat topics.

If you make a yahoogroup or MSN group open anyone can post on it, you don't have to "know" anyone.

Does UCF have a daily jolt site? Post there.

Do they have an alumni message board? Post there.

If you want to talk to other people on here from UCF, you can schedule a chat and chat with them in real time.

And you can have a thread or two on here devoted to UCF - we've had plenty about Pitt, Clemson, various schools. No one will mind.

GC is huge enough. The last thing we need is forums for individual schools.

on facebook.com theres a UCF greeks forum, theres (i think) 50 of us... all u need to sign up is your pegasus email (which u can get if u type in "ucf.edu") .. also theres a livejournal with ucf greeks, www.livejournal.com/community/ucfgreeks OR www.livejournal.com/community/ucf_greeks

Those are the ones I know about... so good luck!

Again, this site is easier to find than an msn or yahoogroup.

Nope

Nope. I'm not an alumnus anyways.

Scheduling problems. Lack of diversity. You have to know people. If it were that easy, that's all this site would be.

It's very hard to find things here, because of the amount of people on this site. If you don't keep up with it every day, you'll probably miss a thread. You shouldn't have to search for forums every time you come on the site. Again, it's a matter of streamlining.

You'll never know unless you try. If it doesn't work out, simply close up shop and move on. I just think it would be beneficial to the greek community to at least try it instead of saying it's too much work.

33girl 11-18-2004 01:23 AM

If you click on Greek Chat Forums and then look at the right hand side, there is a button called "View New Posts." You can click on this every time you sign back in and you won't miss any threads.

The problem is going to be that once people see there are individual school forums, EVERYONE is going to want one, even if they are the only person from their school posting here. We've already experienced that with people who are the only person from their local wanting a separate forum for their local. John doesn't have the time to be setting up this many forums - he is the only one who can do this, regular mods cannot. That's a lot to ask of one person who already has his hands full with this site as it is.

TylerG18 11-18-2004 01:24 AM

Well something's better than nothing I guess. Thanks Kim! I still think that it's a good idea though and I don't think it would be as much work as ya'll think. All I ask is that the idea gets some consideration. Not just for me, but for all greeks.

Like I said, set a minimum amount of people who would have to request the forum.

An easy way to do this would be to have a request section where people could post their schools. As soon as the minimum amount reply to that thread, they get their forum.

How many times must I bang my head against the wall because of UCF? No offense ZTAngel, adpiucf, et. al. It's an inside joke, so don't anyone get their panties in wad.

As the wise Sheila once said:

"HOP TO IT JOHN!"

It's GreekChat. Not UF GreekChat. Not Ole Miss GreekChat. Not UCF GreekChat. Just because you can get a minimum of 10-20 to request their own forum, who's to say that that won't stop others from requesting one also? As 33girl said, many members of locals have requested a forum for their own GLO in the past, but it's just not feasible.

You might not think that not a lot of work is put into this site, and you seem to think that adding forums is a piece of cake. It's not.

If you're so determined to get your own campus forum, I'd suggest PM-ing John Hammell, the site administrator, directly because there's nothing that neither 33girl nor myself and the other mods can do about your situation. While us mods can't configure the site to what you want, we can advise John on what would be beneficial to the site.

And I'm telling you now, I doubt your idea would fly. Unless you bribed John with $$$ and maybe, just maybe, he'd consider it.

Until then, just be happy with what you already have. Mmmmkay? Mmmmkay.

What's wrong with just having the forum on your school's Facebook page? It's not like people don't check it like 50 times a day when they have a paper due the next morning...

Sorry, but what is a jolt? LOL...
Anyways, Tyler, when I think of daily jolt (whatever that means) I'm thinking of http://www.livejournal.com/~ucf where over 1000 UCF students make random posts (the biggest college community on LJ I think)...but most of the people on there are anti-greek in a way, especially one of the mods "StormSigma" who is very anti-greek...the rest of the mods are alright though.
And like what Kim said, those other LJ communities for UCF Greeks are alright too which are both run by a PiPhi
Since individual school forums aren't ok...what about individual state forums? but 50 still seems a lot so maybe Alaska & Hawaii schools should hook up LOL. Maybe just split it up into the Northwest, Southeast, Midwest, etc or something like that.
If not, then it's not the end of the world lol

This is GreekChat. Not CampusChat. Nor is it StateChat.

That is all. Please drive through.
