I need your help. My one year old son was just hospitalized for the 6th time for asthma this weekend. His severe illness has caused me to miss a lot of work. Well, several people have mentioned to me that Social Security offers some kind of monetary supplement for children with severe asthma. Has anyone ever heard of this. If so, can share with me more information. Thank you for your advice.

Yes, I have heard of this. If a child is physically or mentally handicapped by a physicians standards, a parent can receive supplemental income. There are financial guidelines that differ from state-to-state, however the procedures for applying are just about the same. Telephone your local S.S. office to request an application be mailed to you. The application normally requests medical informaton about your child, your income and marriage status, and authorization to receive medical records from all of your childs' doctors/pediatricians. You will then complete, SIGN and DATE EVERYTHING (Keep a copy for your files). A letter usually follows in 6-8 weeks determining your eligiblity. God bless, I will pray for your family.

Absolutely. Asthma is a life threatening condition that sometimes alter the way of life for individuals.

SSA has only two types of disability payments... one is for those who have paid into Social Security (and their disabled children).

The other program is SSI (Supplemental Security Income), which is paid by your STATE, based on financial need, as a result of disability.

SSA defines disability as TOTAL inability to perform ANY work... This same strict definition is applied to any child who applies for disability benefits. In 1996, they defined a child as being disabled if he had a physical or mental condition that could be substantiated by a doctor and which resulted in severe functional limitations. It must have lasted at least 12 months or is expected to result in death.

There is a list of "disabling conditions"... It's been a while since I dealt with disability, but I don't remember asthma being on the disabling list.. probably because many children grow out of it.

I will keep you in my prayers. My younger brother has asthma also and my Mom has tried very hard to get Social Security for him. To date, it has been very hard for her to get it and he still does not get a check. The Social Security people are very strict these days. But Soror continue to pray and keep the faith.

Thanks BeeJae for the research it helped. I have an appointment with Social Security on June 7th, I guess I'll take it from there. However, the best remedy for my baby is lots of prayer, and that's what my sorors and sisterfriends have being doing for me constantly. I fell your each and every prayer. I know you are with me. I will keep you posted on the results!
