CBS fires producer
CBS has fired the producer who interupted CSI with the news that Arafat had died, making CBS first on the air and accurate with the news.
On her way out, she had to pass the offices of Dan Rather and his producer, who repeatedly aired phony news based on phony documents. |

What this comes down to in the long run is the balance between "News Judgement," and money -- with a little lack of common sense thrown in on the side. CBS was the first of the "major" networks to get the story on the air. That's generally good. Except when you're talking about the very end of one of the top rated shows on TV. Then, it's generally bad. Several years ago, there would have been no problem with what the producer did because "Journalism" ruled at "Black Rock." It's not a black and white these days with CBS's corporate parent. Also, the line about passing Rather's office is a cheap shot. CBS made a mistake, but it believed in its' source until proven wrong and then retracted the story on the air, anchored by Rather and brought in two highly respected investigators who are conducting an investigation. |
