I do know that Steve Harvey and DL Hughley are hosting. Yolanda Adams and Eve and Aaliyah are also going to be in attendance. |
Steve and DL had me http://www.plauder-smilies.de/rofl.gif http://www.plauder-smilies.de/lach.gif with their country jokes.
Looks like Lauryn has de-locced. Venus and Serena are just beautiful and I am soooooo glad they grew into their teeth. THE GOOD: Latanya Richardson's poem, the recognition of the motherswho have lost children. CAN YOU IMAGINE LOSING ALL 3 of YOUR CHILDREN? Those women are truly making a difference. Also Donnie and Yolanda RIPPED it!! Loved it. Chaka, Jennifer and Gladys' performance was great also. THE BAD:Lauryn Hill's SIX MINUTE song that had me looking like http://www.plauder-smilies.de/screams.gif . HER HAIR just did not fit her. She looks like a little boy. THE UGLY: SUSAN TAYLOR'S dress I agree Sean Combs could have been left out of the whole thing. I was ROFLMAO @ Samuel L. Jackson singing SO FRESH & SO CLEAN. http://www.plauder-smilies.de/party/dance.gif ------------------ http://www.plauder-smilies.de/elefant.gif #4 Spring 1997 Omicron Theta Wittenberg University////__\\\\ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ He who asks questions cannot avoid the answers. The Good
The honorees, especially The Hageman Brothers and Mothers Against Violence. I was sobbing by the time they actually came on stage. Also, Donnie and Yolanda had CHURCH up in there, and that's when my love for Blackflok was shining: did you SEE the audience moved by the Spirit? The Bad DeNiro's nervousness. Um, maybe the DL joke threw him off, but you know he loooooves that brown suga! And Camille's dress. Loved the hair... but the dress... ? The Ugly Serena William's Bubble Yum Dress. Um, er, what? Asides: LOVED Eve's duster, Gladys and Jennifer were too smooth, the usual classy divas they are! DL trying to pronounce a few words-practice makes perfect. Music choices, a bit overblown by the orchestra and arranger. Can someone explain the meaning behind Lauryn's song? Was it anti-false god, or anti-harsh God? |

The Good: The men who started the private school in Harlem, those Mothers (they had me bawling, and on a long distance call--a close friend of mine was a victim of violence about a year ago), Donnie and Yolanda!!!, the overall classiness of the presentation. You KNOW that is rarely shown on television. Also, worth noting, Venus and Serena really looked nice. The Bad: I really didn't see the point of P. Diddy/Puffy/whatever being there. Star did most of the talking...and with all the recent controversy surrounding him, I didn't think Essence wanted any parts in that. The What The? (sorry, I had to add a special category) Lauryn looks like she's goin' through something. She looked like a 14 year old boy with her hair like that. Now, people with haircuts like that, don't start hating on me...I don't have a problem with the cut, but it just doesn't look good on Lauryn. Everyone can't rock it. I also don't know what to think of her song... http://www.plauder-smilies.de/sad/nixweiss.gif The Ugly: Hmmm...I really didn't see anything that was OUT THERE...I really didn't have a problem with Camille's dress! I just thought it was different! Overall I loved the show! http://www.plauder-smilies.de/happy/invasion.gif PrettyPetite [This message has been edited by PrettyPetite (edited May 25, 2001).] |
Ladies, Ladies, Ladies!! You guys are KILLING ME with these responses (my daughter wants to know why I am laughing sooooo hard) http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif This is MY take on the ESSENCE AWARDS SHOW that aired last night.
THE GOOD: The poem that was read (I can't remember the lady's name, but I know that she's an actress---she was AWESOME). The song by Lauryn Hill (yes, I actually liked the song. I just didn't see what it had to do with the theme of the show, but I liked the song). Steve Harvey and DL Hugley were very funny. The presentations of awards to those brothers from Harlem and the surgeon. Yolanda Adams and Donnie were OFF THE CHAIN (Yoland sung her heart out). The presentation of the awards to the mothers. Overall the ceremony was very tasteful. These are the kinds of African-American awards shows that I really enjoy watching. Everyone was DRESSED--Iman could have done a little better, but she still looked good. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif THE BAD: Yeah, I'm gone say it, PUFF DADDY did NOT need to "give his two-cents). He'll ALWAYS be PUFF DADDY to me (and probably everyone else). Just because he wants some of the heat taken off of him, he wants to change his name. When will he realize that no matter WHAT he changes his name to, the stigma and attention that came from his BEHAVIOR will still be there?. It's not his NAME that he has to change, but his BEHAVIOR. I really don't see why they had him on there in the first place. THE UGLY: Although I love Lauryn Hill (and the song that she sang last night), yeah, I agree that she MUST be going through some things. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif I am one of those sisters with the natural cut also. But BELIEVE ME, I wouldn't have gotten it if my hair dresser did not feel that the cut would fit me. No, that cut don't fit Lauryn. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif But her voice and face are STILL beautiful and she's STILL rolling in the dough. I didn't pay much attention to Camille Cosby's dress, but I DID notice that she's gained a few pounds. It looks good on her. Again, overall the show was a success and I'm glad that Susan Taylor (she's an awesome female) uses taste and tact in her shows and magazines. |

She looks like a little boy. Soror, it is funny as heck that you should make that statement. Reason being, there's a girl that works with me who I made the same statement about 2 years ago. Actually, what I said was "She looks like a 12 year old, adolescent boy"!!!! Senior Member posted May 25, 2001 09:54 AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I did not watch the entire thing, but was trying to distract myself from the horror that has fallen on my loved ones. I may be out of touch, but I caught the part where there where four mothers on stage speaking about the necessity of protecting our children from violence. Each of these mothers had lost her children. One had lost all four of her sons. I am a mother of one 3 y/o son and often think of ways that I can protect him from the violence that is troubling this world. After listening to these mothers last night the reality of the danger my son is facing really set in on me. I am scared to death for him. I feel helpless. BUT . . . I know that with God's will and armor that we can all protect my son and everyone elses sons and daughters. So, I put forth the task to everyone of you that sees this message . . . What will YOU say to protect these children? What will you DO to protect these children? Your answers to these questions should go far beyond the act of love and extend into the fields of action. I will be there . . . fighting so that they can live. Where will YOU be? Patiently learning and Learning patience ------------------ Have nothing to do this weekend? Unfortunately I caught bits and pieces of the show, but I did see Lauren perform...I think she's trying to take her music to another level. Her song was deep...so deep, I don't think she got it! I wasn't impressed with the hair, it didn't compliment her face at all. However, her voice is still rich and sista can blow, she's doin' her thing.

She said Lorenz. I'm just saying, she could have picked the fro. And y'all liked Serena's dress? Seriously? Camille's dress wasn't that bad, just a lil too too for me. There really wasn't too much "bad" stuff going on. This was the best awards show with Black folks I have seen in a LONG while. Thanks, Essence, for holdin it down! |
The What The? (sorry, I had to add a special category) Lauryn looks like she's goin' through something. She looked like a 14 year old boy with her hair like that. That new category was very much needed for Lauren's performance and appearance. I agree that the show was done tastefully and Essence really represented black people in a good way last night. Here's another one for "The What The". When Denzel and his wife were presenting the award to the doctor and every was screaming while he was talking. He's a nice looking man and I know he's admired by many but dang let the man speakk. While he's talking about how this doctor helped a little boy from Africa they're screaming at the top of their lungs. There's a time and place for everything. THE GOOD
Ditto to everything said above, except that I think IMAN looked tight as H-E-double hockey sticks. I hope to look that good when I'm her age. THE BAD Maxwell just presenting...My man should have been performing instead of that Lorenz Tate looking...oops, I mean Lauryn Hill...(dees just jokes people...I love me some Lauryn). http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif THE UGLY The editing of the show...I mean, you heard people clapping and cheering, but they would show the audience sitting still. Overall, I laughed, I cried, I smiled...it was a bomb show. |
