Hey yall...

We are just starting a chapter here at Southern Arkansas last semester and we have a great mixture of gender, race, and personalities which I love. I have noticed from viewing APO websites and meeting a few brothers from other schools that there are chapters that are mostly male or female, black or white. I also notice, with that, the chapters do things a lot differently.

Im just wondering what kind of diversity do you guys have in your chapters? Do you see a difference when you meet chapters from different schools in the way you do things and the closeness (is that even a word *shrugs*) between brothers?

For themost part I find that chapters tend to reflect the campus in terms of racial diversity. The chapter that I pledged at (Kappa)probably had 2 or 3 blacks out of the 130(?) who were brothers at any time that I was. But that wasn't that far from the racial balance of the school (Carnegie-Mellon in PGH).

OTOH, Zeta Phi chapter at Howard, I don't know if it has had a non african american brother since rechartering. I do know it has had at least one, I remember seeing a Caucasian in a yearbook photo in the 1960s.


Generally, the chapters at Historically Black Colleges & Universities do keep stronger ties after graduation and to some degree as undergraduates, But there are certainly brothers who go against that tendency in both directions. I'm rapidly approaching my 18th anniversary of becoming a brother and still going strong.

I expect that SAU will end up with traditions somewhat between those of Howard and U Michigan (just to pick two with very different characteristics. SAU has 20%+ Caucasians and 5 historically white Fraternities/Sororities to go with a full contingent of the NPHC.

Maybe not what you are asking, but my two cents worth.

Zeta Phi has had non African American members since the rechartering...It is more likely that we may increase the number of non African American brothers in the chapter since there are more non African American people on Howard's campus :) :cool:

Racial wise, we aren't that diverse. Predominately white. We used to be VERY racially diverse in our petitioning days.

Gender wise, we're 50/50.

Lifestyle wise, we're quite diverse. We had everything from potheads, metro-sexuals, gays, "sorority girls", "frat boys", jocks, brainies, to social recluses since our petitioning days a few years back.

Just my opinion, diversity is a liiiiittle over-rated. It's kind of hard to move in one direction when you have so many people with different backgrounds, expectations, and goals....ya know?

Raically we are very diverse, if you count APO world wide we are multicultural. Dont forget about the 1 million bros in the phillipiness. Also gender wise we are about 60 percent women as it stands. Please before you comment on the frat please do research. Diverse means cultures and religions which we have all in APO, maybe your chapter is mostly white but there are alot of chapters that are mixed. Culturally and racially.

[color= seagreen] Being completely new to my chapter - I saw alot of things from the outside perspective. Now that Im in - I still see it the same way.

I am a mixed female at a PWI - so guess what all people in my chapter are white. There is a girl who is mixed (black and white), another who is hawaiian and white and a guy who was in my pledge class is some kind of Asian. But thats its for diversity.

It seems to be looking back at their pics and history books, they used to be alot more diverse and I am hoping to bring that aspect to the chapter to hopefully get all kinds of people to join our chapter.

Im looking forward to seeing what one of the Brothers (yeah we are only sending one to Nationals) brings back from Nationals.

Its interesting to me to just sit here and see all the differences between the regions, sections, chapters and even areas of the US! Hopefully we can all share ideas b/c please believe me I need some! [/color]
