Insurance for Locals?

Where do locals get insurance?
My chapter was part of a national for over 100 years but had to break with national in 2000 when they went dry and were rechartered as a local. Nothing really changed- we learn the same stuff and have the same traditions. The change was only on paper. Recently, a lawsuit (some kid got punched by a bouner we hired) filed against us caused the school to look more closely at the insurance policies of greek houses. Ours, which is from Essex, has a pretty broad alcohol exclusion, which means we cant register kegs or technically even have alcohol in social spaces. This is the reason we broke with our national in the first place. Since we are in a section of a dorm (as most fraternities at my scchool are now) we cant hide our alcohol. Who do you use for insurance and do they cover alcohol?

Trey going to a local Insurance agent, that is what my group did. We pay very little but we have the same coverage as most nationals, it would sky rocket if we had a house but that is one of the reasons why we don't. As far as alcohol coverage goes we just can't sell it or host it, it has to be a 3rd party vendor.
Hope that helps

Nearly any, if not all, insurers aren't going to insure you for serving alcohol as a fraternity...unless you want to pay a bazillion dollars in coverage.

What insurance companies do you guys have? My sorority is looking into getting insurance. ANy suggestions?

yeah, what's the deal with insurance for locals? are they imperative or can we get away with not paying any insurance? my girls and I are in the early stages of starting a local (it's sort of OK'd by the school, though the bureaucracy is ridiculous because the national PanHel of the recognized sororities is afraid of us taking from their potentials pool), but anyway we are planning on living off-campus, so would that even be an issue?

Insurance if not required is sure recomended! My school requires is to carry insurance because of the fact that things can happen and our school wants to see that we are doing everything in our power to protect ourselves and the school. It is only going to help you in the long run especially if you start reaching high membership numbers.

From what I understand from my college. If a local is not insured, the legal responsibility for all sorority actions are placed directly on the President and Vice President. Meaning, if someone gets punched, because there is no reason to sue the sorority for compensation, the Pres or VP can be held responsible in court. That is what we were explained by HQ when we were dealing with a local on our campus trying to go NPC.

My sorority just got insurance coverage last year. The Pres and VP were kind of stressed with the being solely responsible if something happened. It's through Admiral Insurance Company. I think they do a lot with local greeks insurance. We had to get it financed, though because it can get kind of pricey.

My sorority is a local and we have insurance through a company that caters to locals. Our Policy costs us about 3600 a year and it provides us the same things that national orgs get. We had to develop a risk management statement which was relatively easy, we jsut based it on what another organization at our school had. The web address for our carrier is below.

How much are you all paying per person for your insurance?

BlueEyedButrfly 02-03-2007 12:55 AM

My college does not require it.

What does insurance cover?
I know all the policies are different but what are some of the main things that should be taken care of?

what is the insurance company that you use, my organization is currently looking for affordable fraternity insurance

Aduladi 08-26-2007 04:34 PM

We are insured through Kirklin which is one of the few affordable companies out there that will work with smaller orgs. Our Policy costs us about $3600 a year and it provides us the same things that national orgs get. We have 50 members spread through about 7 states with 3 active chapters. The web address for our carrier is below.
