Interesting sight...
So there I am, minding my own business, enjoying a refreshment on Thursday night while our town's bagel maker does a great kaoroake job of Twist and Shout, when I saw a Deepher wearing her letters in the bar.
As you all can see I live in New Jersey, and I live in a town with a university and a D Phi E chapter. (Yeah I know this totally narrows down the number of chapters this girl could be from...) Don't want to be old-fashioned or old school but I was *shocked* that this girl had the guile to wear *our* letters in a bar while drinking alcohol. I introduced myself as a fellow sister and told her that my chapter never wore letters in a bar. She just said, well, my chapter's pretty wild. And then ten minutes later, I saw another sister in letters. I understood D P hi E National rule to be that sisters *never* wore their letter in a bar. And, just to be sure that I wasn't crazy, and it was, like, a Deepher thing, I asked friends who are former Pi Phis, Tri-Sigs, SDTs, and three Tri-Delts who went to three different schools. All these people went to different universities all over the nation and everyone was really surprised that any Panhel sister wore their letters in the bar. And I say Panhel even though I'm sure most locals wouldn't wear their letters in a bar. And not to take away from any chips on this girl's shoulder, but everyone's chapter is wild. My chapter, Eta, I think we were wild. I know they're still wild. I'm sure there are KDs, A D Pis, and Kappas who were and are wild at Pitt. All my friends in their own universitites were wild. That's what it means for some people to go to college. I think this bothered me for two reasons: 1) not to be a grandbig or anything, but this is an issue of respect. Take your letters off if you're not going to be respecting your letters to the best of your ability. Drinking, contary to popular Panhel and Deepher belief, is not a good representation of your skills as a good sorority sister. 2) Trying to be wild IN NEW JERSEY is not to wear your letters in the bar. Being wild in New Jersey in college is like cheering for the Eagles or Red Sox or something. It was such a bad excuse for bad behavior. Am I an old foogie or what? Dude, I turn 23 in a week - I graduated in 2003. I'm not old and I don't think that my attitude towards this sight was old fashioned. These yun-uns just have no respect! All right, discuss! |
I'd be interested to hear just what university this is. You can PM me if you want.

dphies00 - your age is showing! j/k!
I agree with you! (except on the Eta chapter being wild part -fun, yes, wild, no... those are the things that give chapter advisors nightmares! I like to think of them sitting in the suite crocheting afghans for the less fortunate.) ETA: Fix my bad grammar! |
Oh boy. I can't believe that was her response. I think that this chapter needs to understand that their wearing letters in the bar is totally out of line. It just goes to show that you need to remember you are representing this organization at ALL times cuz you never know who you are gonna run into. It makes me worry that if these girls are blatantly wearing our letters in a bar like that, what else are they doing that wouldn't represent us well? I am not saying that we were 100% perfect all the time, far from it, but this is just wrong. Every National, DPhiE or not, I thought KNEW that you just don't do this. Oh my:eek:
