History of Stepping

Hey everyone, my name is Tabitha! I become a Zeta Phi Beta in 1996 at Texas Tech University. My purpose of writing, today, is my daughter is doing a history project over "Africa Americans Communicating through "Stepping" Then & Now. This is the problem we have located information on the "history of stepping" but we cannot pinpoint where it originated. Can someonee pinpoint where "stepping" orginiated & who can she call for primary sources (to interview). If anyone would like to contact me, please e-mail me at tabtrue@yahoo.com.

I don't think it's possible to pinpoint all the places that stepping came from. There are some African influences, yes, but it didn't "come" from Africa. There are some do-wop, military, and gospel traditions, too. Even "white" fraternity traditions. It all comes together to make stepping, which I think is a uniquely African American art.

She has located various of information from fraterities and they state how African traditons related to "stepping" and how slaves we allowed to dance (stepping). I am still looking for information, she has to be finished by the end of Nov.
