Hail to the Chief! LADIES AND GENTLEMEN! I present to you, your Vice-President of the United States for the next Four Years! http://www.stlcommercemagazine.com/a...ick_cheney.jpg Hail Columbia, happy land! Hail, ye heroes, heav'n-born band, Who fought and bled in freedom's cause, Who fought and bled in freedom's cause, And when the storm of war was gone Enjoy'd the peace your valor won. Let independence be our boast, Ever mindful what it cost; Ever grateful for the prize, Let its altar reach the skies. Firm, united let us be, Rallying round our liberty, As a band of brothers joined, Peace and safety we shall find. Behold the chief who now commands, Once more to serve his country stands. The rock on which the storm will break, The rock on which the storm will break, But armed in virtue, firm, and true, His hopes are fixed on Heav'n and you. When hope was sinking in dismay, When glooms obscured Columbia's day, His steady mind, from changes free, Resolved on death or liberty. Congratulations to the President for winning Re-Election, with the most votes ever given to a Presidential Candidate! |
Pre-sent... ARMS!

Isn't this the biggest voter turnout ever? Isn't it *probably* safe to assume that Kerry got the most votes ever for a "losing" Presidential candidate? (Again, I haven't seen numbers, but it just stands to reason I think - anyone know?) I understand it's the truth, but I heard someone from the Bush camp saying that the most votes ever "proves" how much the country is behind Bush. Now, if he had won a landslide popular vote of 60+% I would agree with that, but at 51%-48%? That doesn't prove the country is behind him I don't think. I guess I've just heard so much spin lately that I felt this claim was a silly stretch. Again, I know "my" guy lost but I'm not trying to stir anything up. Just trying to discuss...Please try to do so nicely. :) |
I'm not denying the country is still divided, but the huge voter turnot (120 million voters) is still a pretty big deal.

Oh, I agree, turnout was amazing! But I think you're missing my question. I checked a site called infoplease.com and it has stats for previous elections.
1984 Reagan got 54,445,075 1996 Clinton got 47.402,357 In this year's vote, Kerry - the loser - got 55,128,439! Should we say Kerry is an outstanding candidate because he has more popular vote than Clinton or Reagan? See what I mean? I guess I'm just saying I think the info is really mislading and silly. I just think it's reaching. You won! Congrats! We can stop spinning now, ya know? Maybe it's just me... Guess it doesn't really matter anyway, though... |

Shouldn't the picture in the first post be of Cheney?

Kerry over Reagan. ;)
And all I can say to the rest of this thread is: ew. |

Now, let's get past this election and get on with running the country. |
Well spoken, DeltAlum.
I'm sure he will agree that, once you've been in the company of the President and heard "Hail to the Chief" in person, that song will send shivers down your spine for the rest of your life! |

I worked as the Ceremonial Guard (think of the Marine Guard at Arlington) up in Ottawa and was at many, many functions greeting the dignitaries of too many countries to count... each has their own song that they play, sometimes a special "accolade" sometimes simply the national anthem of the nation in question. In the end I came to the conclusion that the office and image wasn't what impressed me, but the person... and unfortunately too many politicans are just dicks once the public and press are gone... |

I just wanted to point out that Bill Clinton never reached 50% of the popular vote.
