Ignorance is STILL alive!!!!!

Hello all Sisterfriends/Brotherfriends!!!

My friend in SC recently e-mailed the following article to me:

"Walking While Black" by Bryonn Bain

This article is in the Village Voice and I recommend that ALL read it in order to gain or refresh our understanding about what goals we should set and focus on both in our personal lives and for the community. This article would outrage ANYONE who believes in equality and justice.

I am the wife and mother of black males and after reading this article you will realize what concerns me so about this. I realized that my son and husband are (on a daily basis) like walking targets. Incidents like this occur ALL of the time and they get worse throughout the generations. I can imagine what things will be like once my son becomes a teenager.

I am disgusted and disturbed by what this young man (like so many of our black men/black people)has had to endure. It's a shame that we live in a society (the most ADVANCED society in the world) and haveto go through this kind of nonsense. What do you think????

MeezDiscreet 05-05-2001 07:29 PM

how do we read it?

korkscru 05-05-2001 09:10 PM

Oh, I'm sorry MeezDiscreet. I'm still learning things about the internet and how to access things. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif Just type in www.village voice.com. Then in search type in "Walking While Black". There will be four of the same topic listed. Click on the last one. It's a really good article.

Sorry Madam Moderator and thank you for informing me about the previous thread. I know that you are sincere about the policy regarding repeated threads. I'm sorry if it appeared as if I ignored any previous threads about this topic. I guess I should have read further into the forum. Would you please let me know what thread discusses this topic and I'll channel my comment to that one. It really IS a good topic though. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Respectfully,

Korkscru

P.S. And thank you!, Thank you!, Thank you for being so nice about it! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

You're Welcome! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif

LOL well, see, that's the thing...I don't remember where it is (I TOLD you my mind is bad http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif). I don't think it's in the Delta fourm though. Now that I think about it more, it may not have been discussed on gc at all. Sorors who were on Violets (if you don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry) didn't we talk about this article? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/confused.gif OK, this is going to bother me until I figure out how I first came across this article. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/redface.gif

How about you & I both look and whomever finds it first will let everyone know? Cool? Cool. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

I don't know if y'all read the feedback that the article received, but even in the face of the detail description of events he gave, people (who responded to the article) are still insisting that the incident did not occur because he was black. "It could happen to anyone," was written several times throughout the responses I read. Yeah, sure, it could happen to anybody, but I gotta say it seems to happen disproportionately to black men. So how do you rationalize that?

CrimsonTide4 05-06-2001 08:34 AM

12dn94dst,
I do believe that Violets is where I first encountered the article last summer. When I first encountered SF Korkscru's post, I said this sounds familiar.

Ladies this just shows you that 12dn94dst and I are on the internet way too much and get a lot of e-mail. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

On the article, a lot of the events in the article struck deep within me and made me fearful for my brother and every other BLACK male in my life.
