Question About Relocation
Hey Sorors, sisterfriends, and other chatters! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif It's me, soror6! <<soror6 waving, as if y'all can see her>>
OK, I have a question, and I would love your $19.13, 2 cents, or whatever you can give. I have lived in the Chicago area for pretty much most of my life. I have also lived short stints in Peoria IL, Washington DC, Lake Tahoe NV, and South Beach/Miami FL. I truly like Chicago alot, but for some reason, I have always had an affinity for Washington DC. No matter what is going on in my life, whenever I visit there, I get this feeling of peace. I have remained in Chicago the last few years primarily for a relationship, as well as my business but the business is web-based so I can pretty much run it from there too. I am ending my 7-year relationship, and I am beginning to feel that my spirit/inner voice is telling me to go to DC. It has been saying this for a while, but I think I tuned it out. I might have done it earlier, but I was afraid of the unknown. What do you think of relocating as a single gal on my own? Also, if you are from the area, how do you like it? I don't have any support system/family there, although I do have a few friends still there from the last time I lived there. One person inparticular has been sending me tickets to come there almost every week to see if I feel the same way about the city, as well as trying to sell me on opening a greek shop there, since there really aren't any. I would love some impartial insight on my dilemma, what you know about the area, job market, etc., and what you think about the move. I have talked to friends, family, and sorors, but they don't want me to leave them, so that factors into their decision. That is why i am asking y'all too. I truly enjoy reading and contributing to threads with my GC friends that have been so wonderful to me, so I would love to get your opinions. Sorry if this is long, but thanks in advance for your insight! I look forward to reading your posts or e-mails if you want to send it off the board. Don't worry, I want to hear your opinions, good or bad! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif Bye for now! soror6 |
I'd say go for it!
You're in an enviable position because like you said you are single and child-free. When it's just you there are less complications. You also have the additional bonus of having a web based business that travels where ever you go! Now for DC, I've lived here for 13 years. I've also lived in Cleveland (hometown), Augusta, GA, and Charlotte, NC. Out of all those places I consider, DC home. I love the fact that it's a tri-state area. Culturally, there is such a wide range of nationalities and influences. I find the area to be positive for the most part as well because you have so many professional, spiritually positive people. Black folks here are on the move. Not to say that you don't find that in every city; however, there is an abundance. I find that fact alone to be very motivating. The idea of a greek shop is also very good. I personally know of only 3 shops off hand. The Guild (across from Howard), one on U of M's campus, and there's one in Baltimore. In closing, I'm a firm believer in following your heart. If you feel that DC is where you yearn to be than follow that dream. Additionally, there's plenty of your sorority sisters here who I bet you could call upon. Reds6 is one of them. Please feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you'd like to chat about it. Hey Soror, I say do what your heart leads you to do. Besides you already know another person down here besides your man with the hook up on tickets ME http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif. Also I agree that you can't move here for a man, but its nice to have a support system. Email me if you need anything. I'm going to send you my number.

When I graduated from college I moved from an all Black environment in Atlanta (HBCU) to a job in the suburbs of Minneapolis, MN. The only person that I "knew" when I moved there was the person that recruited me and some distant cousins that I had not seen for about 10 years. It was a great experience for me. I got out of my comfort zone, met some great people and had some great times. I ended up leaving MN after about 2 1/2 years but it was still a great experience. Are you planning on getting another job in addition to your internet business? With the internet you can do some job search without even leaving Chicago. Who knows, you may even get a company to pay for your relocation! Be lead by the Holy Spirit, but know that you are already at an advantage because you know some people there already.
