Another Frat in Trouble

So apparently in Oklahoma, a Delta Upsilon pledge was hospitalized & is now recovering after ingesting too much alcohol. Of course now, the media is using this story to warn people not only about the evils of drinking but also to warn them that fraternity (& probably sorority) life could likely result in this happening to you.
*sigh* Like we don't already get a bad rap.

Ah...I just heard the news right now as I was working on my midterm so I figured it was new. I didn't realize that it was already up. Then again, I'm in CA so I get news later than others. I don't tune in to CNN 24/7

According to MADD, 1400 students per year die from alcohol related incidents.

I'm wondering why 1 almost dieing and another being deceased is suddenly getting so much pub.

Don't trust "advocate" figures! Remember the "missing children" crisis and the faces on the milk cartons? Turned out it was mostly hysteria created by activists. Remember all the hubub about "3 million homeless" in America? Turns out the advocates simply threw out a figure that they knew would get people's attention, even though it was grotesquely out of whack. We have 280 million people, and no more than 300,000 were homeless at any time, and most of them concentrated in the major population centers where they have rent control.
I have heard that MADD, especially, has evolved from a sincerely motivated movement to an institution, dependent for its funding on exaggerated claims and wild-eyed activism.
Be very wary of alcohol hysteria promoted by people whose livlihood depends on manufactured "crisis". Kids drinking themselves to death is ghastly; it's just hard for me to believe that it's any more common today than it has ever been.

I think that it is so sad, how bad the rep of Greek life is. For a long time I didn't want to be greek, I didn't want to be "one of the sorority chicks." I didn't rush until my junior year, and I now wish I had done so earlier. The friends that I made in my sorority really will be friends for life, and the experiences I took from greek life taught me so much...it didn't change who I was, but I am very proud of being greek. I wish that we could show the positive sides of greek like, and that the media would show that, because there is so many more positives than negatives about being in a fraternity/sorority. Then with that new Pledged book, it is just making going greek look like something no one should do!
