Philomathean Society (1st post - please be kind!)
Thanks for reading my first post at GreekChat! See my signature below for info on who I am and why I am here.
I finally decided to "de-lurk" after learning today that there is another Philomathean Society out there - founded in 1813 at the University of Pennsylvania. Does Phi Mu have any relation with this group? If not, is the name of this group the reason why your founders changed "the Philomathean Society" to "Phi Mu"? PGHLady |
Philomathean means "seeker of knowledge" or "lover of knowledge" in our case. We became Phi Mu when we voted to join the NPC at the turn of the 20th century.
The Philomathean Society originally founded in 1813 is a true literary, bibliophile society. It would be more akin to a library society. |
Thanks! I'm no expert in Greek, that's for certain. I took Latin for 2 years in high school (don't ask how long ago) and as such am reluctant to study yet another language with declensions. :)
Thanks again, PGHLady |
