all u Color Purple fans..question
ok. Now me and my linesisters have a bet going on.
Think back to when Shug was singing Sista in like the next to the last scence..And they was in the church right and her daddy was like yall sing God is trying to Tell U something...ok my question is... 1. When that old woman looked at the preacher and started to point to him and the group of people out the window..Who was she. I said it was his WIFE..Shug's mom. They said no it wasn't. It was just some random church woman:rolleyes: .. 2. Now for the girl who is leading the song and Shug takes it over. Who is she. I say her sista. But everyone says her daughter.. 3. The woman playing the piano..I said she was just some random church woman. They said Shug's sista. I mean where are they getting this.. Help anyone. I have a meal 2 Houston's riding on this.. thanks:p |

1. I always thought that old woman was Shug's mom. 2. I always thought the girl singing was Shug's daughter who the grandpa and grandma were raising since Shug was in the world. 3. Woman playing the piano...I have not idea. Probably just a great pianist ;) |

2. Thought it was just a long time choir member who always wanted to sing that song but as long as Shug was in church, she got to sing the solo. So that Sunday she got to sing it but when she heard Shug do it, she closed her mouth and sat down. 3. Church pianist. |
I never thought about it before, but that soloist in the choir probably was Shug's daughter. As for the older lady, I always thought it was Shug's mom.
|
I always thought the girl singing in the choir was Shug's daughter because of the way she looks (reminded me of Shug) and her mannerisms while singing. It seemed like she was singing the song the same way Shug was while she was walking towards the church.

I agree with most of the post, the girl singing is Shug's daughter she is too young to be her sister.
|
1) I wasn't stud'n this woman but I'll go with the mother story.
2) Shug's daughter most definitely. Mannerisms and she also looked pleased when Shug steps in as opposed to like "here come this heffa again takin' my solo." 3) Random lady. |
Has anyone seen the play? It's sold out here in the ATL, so I wasn't able to get tickets. My friend told me that the play really showed Shugs and Celie's lesbian relationship, something I think Speilberg couldn't explore way back in 1985. I think it was only implied in the movie.
I was reading on another board once about some interesting things about this movie: 1. The song Celie and Nettie sing at the beginning and end is 'Makidada'. Quincy Jones wrote that song, do you think that is a song he used to sing to his daughter? (My Kidada) 2. At the dinner table during dinner, (when Celie has her moment), the little girl sitting next to Sophia, (Oprah Winfrey) is Whoopi's real-life daughter. 3. In the book, Celie and Shug were lovers. In the movie, at the end, when Shug came back, she didn't have her husband with her and it appeared that she and Celie were living together. Celie says something along the lines of she and Shug still have 'longings'. Anything else that was subtle that any of you picked up on? |
Wow, you all have awakened in me a whole new interest in the movie. Going out to buy it.

You pointed out things about the movie that I never thought about until now.
Whatever happened to the actress that played Shug? |
