I have this theory about being nineteen...

I think, as a general rule, nineteen is the year that everyone goes wild. Granted, people do it in different ways: binge drinking, sleeping around, whatever... But I think people go through this period when they're nineteen that they just go wild. I think it's that when you're 18, you have just gotten to college, and are still kind of experimenting around. At 19, you start burning your fake ID up, because being 18 and going to little keg parties is no longer exciting, and if they are, you want to be the one doing the keg stand or the one taking ice louge shots or seeing who you can outdrink. At 20, this finally starts catching up to you, and you realize that this cannot be an everyday thing. So, you still drink and go to parties, but not as much as when you were 19. At 21, all the excitement is gone. You can go buy your own alcohol whenever you want to, so it's not a game of "drink until I get caught." And at 22, it's all downhill... You turn into an old geezer who can't hang out with the wild 19 year olds anymore.

Just a theory. I'm working on proving it true.

If people don't run wild when they're younger, they're going to turn 30 and freak the hell out and WANT to run wild. Unless of course they're like puritans or something.

PhoenixAzul 10-10-2004 03:44 PM

I don't know, I'm 19 and I'm what most people would call a "puritan". Never drank, smoked, had sex and am actually part of a youth culture movement called Straightedge (it's related to punk rock and hardcore if you're curious). But it pretty much means that I've made a vow to never do any of the above (sex within marriage/monogamous relationship although that's up to personal preference...drugs, alcohol, smokes are the main three). But at any rate, I agree with the assesment of 19 being the "cut loose" age. By 21 you're just bored by it because you burned yourself out on partying when you were younger.

James 10-10-2004 03:53 PM

Has the cut loose age gotten older? I thought people did a lot of that stuff in high school.

Most of that was old hat by college.

Maybe its a bi-modal distribution. Among people whose parents kept them more under the thumb the cut loose is 19,, witht he people that partied it hard younger wondering whats wrong with them :p

CarolinaDG 10-10-2004 04:47 PM

Well, my theory does not restrict to only drinking/having sex. For those who cut loose in high school maybe it's doing cocaine, and for the more "puritan" maybe it's skipping a couple of classes. I think it's a scale thing. I mean, I drank in high school, but not anywhere CLOSE to what I did in college.

kandy36 10-10-2004 05:18 PM

carolinadg..i agree with everything you just said because when i read it, i felt like that was my life story.

seriously ill be the first to admit, i am a recovering slut. i had wild days and i didnt care what people thought about me. but after a while, it just got boring. im 20 now and i look at what i did in the past and i wish i can erase some of it. but we all have to enjoy our youth somehow, someway. i was the one that would skip class, never study and drink everyday. now, i know my priorities and if i do get wasted the night before a class, ill go to class with the hangover. seriously im not gonna lie, the other day i went to class and took a test high off my ass and i got an a. a few years ago, i wouldnt care and i would just sleep through my exams. as far as me in recovery, it kind of scares me because i have a boy now, and its just different. im growing up and wow, im getting old lol...

but i still party like a rockstar...

and i really hope my recovery process goes well, bc a relapse will be hell!!!

I felt bad for the people that cut loose and had bad experiences, couldn't handle it, or eventually just felt guilty and ended up becoming more puritanical later than they were before they had fun.

The born again virgins, soccer moms, and those that preach against any kind of fun.

I agree with you James...

But bong hits aside in the mid 80's, there is chit out there that you wouldn't want any kid to do and you can get killed... If it is not Hepatitis B with HIV, then it is a gun ready to blow your brains out... And Ecstasy mixed with heroin is the drug of choice now... Not just good old plain cocaine...

Besides in the 80's we had Reaganomics, you'd wanted to be high during those times... Now, injectable drugs are what the kids do these days... I guess from all the Ritalin their folks pumped them on... I dunno...

Rudey 10-11-2004 11:22 AM

Sluts are sometimes fun. But by the time they hit 25 they look like they're used up and hitting it with them isn't fun anymore. And when they're 35 they're gross and probably without a spose, chain-smoke, and have gross dried out hair.

Co-sign. I think by the time you are almost 30 and have gotten everything out of your system, you are ready to settle down, and often have learned and can appreciate that Mr. Right doesn't have to be the hot-frat boy that everyone wants to get with.

James 10-11-2004 12:07 PM

You mean you learn to settle lol?

I don't mean "settle" LOL. I just think that as we get older, different things are more important to us, and partying and whoring it up often isn't that important anymore. Not that I think anyone intentionally thinks "I want to be a frat ho" or anything like that. Although I am sure some of you on here can probably prove this statement wrong............

AchtungBaby80 10-16-2004 04:12 PM

I didn't "get wild" until I was considerably past the age you all are talking about. When I was 19, I was more like someone's grandmother than their booty call...I went home every weekend, I stayed in at night and crocheted (but it's OK, because I've got tons of cute scarves to wear in the winter!), and I never drank or did anything of the sort. Never. I looked down on people who did those sorts of things. Then...well, I guess it got old, or I got bored, or I just stopped caring What Other People Would Think...I don't know, but I, er, loosened up quite a bit. That didn't happen until near the end of college.
