Campus reactions to alcohol deaths

You may recall that there have been several deaths so far this year attributed to alcohol poisoning: Two in Colorado, one in Oklahoma, I believe, and a fourth one the location of which I cannot recall.

Has anyone noticed a knee-jerk reaction on the part of administrators to "do something" to prevent this from happening again? I suspect that there will be calls to completely remove alcohol from events and chapter houses and some harsh disciplinary action taken, and I am wondering what you may have seen out there.

John, as I am sure you along with the rest of have seen lately, a out break of Alcohol related deaths and that is just this year alone.. It is becoming a dailey routine.

UC, U Ark. SDSU, U Oak. Etc.

Damn, how long till we paint ourselves into a corner and cant get out of?

To be honest, when I was down for Homecoming this last weekend, one of our new associates got sick from drinking. I almost became unglued, but tried to handle it gently.

I made sure that His New Associate Brothers took care of him and gave the Earp Death Look.

This was no way any kind of a hazing thing so dont even worry about that. I frown on this type of thing totally as you all know.:(

Now, maybe it is to broad of a question, what do we do as Brothers of LXA?

Drinking is not bad in my estimation, it is the abuse of it that becomes the problem along with so much over regulation which is The Knee Jerk reaction of what is coming down upon us.

More regulations for sure, defered Recruitment, totally Dry Campuses. Really, is that going to make young people quit drinking? Not! Just do it underground!

One of the things I got in email to day was ATO Ride the bull for Charity Event. Sorority Girls are getting more risque' to get votes and money for the charity function and win the contest!

Actually, I would like to have seen it!;) Being the dirty old man that I am!:)

Our administration is very hard on drinking, when horrible tragedy's like this happen I always ponder and realize they are doing the right thing. Alcohol is outta control in a lot of SEC schools, especially during football weeekends.
One thing I do not like about alcohol free campuses and no beer at houses is it gives the police more power and the ability to come into your house whenever they want. The cops have way too much authority here, they come into our house and have walk throughs three or four times a night on weekends and that is ridiculous because we are not doing anything wrong.
If a chapter gets caught more than 3 times with underage students with alcohol they get put on probation for a semester, which is not good, extremely hard to recruit here when that happens. The cops are usually good at most of the fraternity's houses I have been at with studdents over the age of 21 because they are more responsible and not like a fresh. trying to show that they can drink a lot and acting cool.
Overall, I hope more schools administrations alcohol policy's become harsher such as UT's because with all the liabilities and high insurance today it is stupid not to have it and it is dangerous for administrations to not have it as a top priority to contain alcohol abuse on campus and limit it as much as possible.

Ryan, question, are these University Owned Housing?

If not and are privately owned by Housing Corporations, then the Police have "NO RIGHT" to just enter a Housing facility with out a warrent of search or a complaint by someone for say noise, whether it be loud party, people in the area trashing the area, or just causing a disturbance. Many excuses can and will be used. If all of the criteria is fulfilled on the Chapters part, then it can be considered Harrisment! Then another leagal situation can be persued with a restraining order.

NO RIGHT to enter without just cause. That is invasion of privacy!

If there is cause, they can and will. If you have a Brother who is a Lawyer, get his advice and He will tell you the same thing.

If they do not have just cause, tell them to leave. Will piss them of, but you do have legal rights to Your Housing.

Granted, they can come up with an excuse, but, that is bull if they just keep checking on specific nights!

If is still a Just Cause.:(

Check the Constitution and with a Lawyer, one you know! A Brother!

Speaking from experience from a an ex COP!

University owns the property, which makes this situation crappy, they can come on the property whenever but the rule at the university is they only do one walk through a night. Our brothers know the rules and abide by them the problem is outsiders that come in on weekends and do things the police do not like, the police officers are usually not as harsh with guys who are not affiliated with the fraternity and do not go to school at UT.

I work for the sgt. of UTPD, he has helped me out a lot with our problems but the police still keep coming whenever they want, more than one time a night on weekends. I have gotten to know a few of the officers and they respect me and vice versa, they understand both of us are in crappy situations but they still keep coming. Usually now they just walk through say hi to me our the High Alpha and leave, but when I leave I do not know what the situation will be like, hopefully it has changed and people realize how important it is to be on good terms with the police at a school where the university owns the property.

Well thanks for your advice Tom, I wish they did not own the property as well as all the other fraternities, causing a huge problem with the new houses about to built. Now I am going to take in this huge victory we just had at Georgia, bigtime upset.
