Coarse Curls or Silky Straight???
Hello all!! I have to do a news article for a journalism class and I need your help. A lot of sisters either choose to wear their hair natural or some choose to go to the salon every 6 weeks and have their hair relaxed...some do it for the convenience, the look, or some may say, trying to emulate European standards of beauty.
What is your opinion?? I'm looking for anyone who has chose to go either route, why you chose that route and your opinions on women who chose to do the opposite of your choice. Also, any comments on the subject as well. My article is due Friday, so, if you like, you may respond to me privately on email at misskriss01@hotmail.com or we can start a discussion right here in the forum!! Thank you so much for your time and I look forward to your comments! |
I visit my salon every 6 weeks for my relaxer. My hair is longer (about bra strap length) very thick, coarse and heavy, so a natural style on me just wouldn't work. Plus the convenience and versitility of my hair is what I like. I can wear it down, curly, in an upsweep, or just pull it back for one of those ponytail days which happens quite often.

i sport the look of locs, they stop at the nap of my neck....
it is very convenient and although most people have spiritual and ethical for wearing them, i don't. i palm roll them myself which is free and i wash my hair once to twice a month. many people look aghasted but i don't have the hair texture to be washed every week and my hair is very strong now, stronger then it was when i sported the relaxed look. i choose natural because chemicals were tearing my hair apart and hot curlers, rollers, spirtz and spray was very costly and too busy. although i believe it does hold one back from a professional job, THE MAN, still does not understand black folks and hair care. I sport a natural.....I have only had it for about eight months but I LOVE IT!!!!! I do not have to worry about going to the beauty salon and sitting for hours....I can go to the barber shop and I am done in less than 30 minutes...I feel so free with my hair being natural...I've gotten more compliments with my hair natural than I did when it was relaxed....I also love to sport head wraps...Just like MaMaBuddha stated I wear it simply because I like it.....I don't know if I'll ever grow my hair back, but if I do it'll be into locks....I guess it really depends on the person and their style....No matter what we look good in any hair style!!!

Soror, you took the words right out of my mouth! I have sported a short natural since 1993. When/if I let my hair grow out, I will start w/ twisties and grow them into locs. Natural is very low maintenance for me. The only chemicals I would ever again consider putting in my hair would be a tad of highlights.

I also wear my hair natural. I love it! I don't think I'm ever letting my hair grow back. Men love it. I get so much more attention now. Men think it is a sign of confidence. Not to mention, its so easy to take care of and I don't have to worry about perms. Many women don't think they can wear their hair natural but you will be surprised that you really can.

I wear my hair relaxed, cut very short (similar to Vanessa Bell Callaway) with highlights. I did the long hair thing (before I got to college), but it was too much aggravation with me being in the band and ultimately with step practice (but I did grow the front long enough to sling http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif). I'm too chicken to go natural (yet http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif). Most of the time I relax my own hair so it's not all that costly, I don't do the spritz thing often and I only curl it about once a week. It works for me and I look cute too http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif
