Sorority Reunion - To go or not to go?
I'm in a quandary...
A couple of months ago, my chapter's president sent out an email to the alums inviting us all to a 10th anniversary celebration/reunion over Columbus Day weekend. (Never mind that my chapter is not even 9 years old. Long story.) I've been thinking about going, to reconnect with other alums from my day and to get to meet younger alums and the actives. (I've been looking forward to meeting one alum in particular, whom I've never met but with whom I've been corresponding by email for a few months.) I just got an email from the chapter's alumnae chair listing the activities they've got planned along with the alums who have RSVP'd. Out of 12 alums, I only know two, and one of them is the reason why I had nothing to do with AEPhi for a long time. (I've posted the story before. Here is one of the posts.) And the activities - there are only a couple of things I'm interested in (the "formal dinner" is at Dick's Last Resort??), and it's also the weekend of one of the chapter's fundraisers, and you just know the alums are going to get pressed into service... So, I can either (a) go to the entire weekend, (b) just go to those things I'm interested in and hope You-Know-Who doesn't go to those same events, or (c) beg off with a work-related excuse (I do have to work that Monday). Advice? |
Go. And act like you hardly remember Miss Whatserface. Be cordial but not friendly; warm but not inviting. Say hi then move on.
You're the better woman, you've moved on! Go to what you want to go to. You're a big girl -- don't let her have this control over your life anymore. Besides, she's probably 70 lbs overweight and has a husband who hates her and a job she can't stand. :D |
The idea of having a formal dinner at Dick's Last Resort is just hilarious. Seriously I hope the person who booked this knows what kind of restaurant it is. LOL. Raunchy.:)

From the reunion planner...
We had a chapter reunion back in 2001 - every single alum, including those from our local, was invited, unless I definitely knew that they had been terminated.
Being a very diverse chapter has its drawbacks. One of them being that occasionally you end up with 2 people who just can't stand each other. I informed everyone that if they came, they needed to suck it up...meaning no bringing up crap from the past, and no bitchiness. Well believe it or not, everyone listened to me, and everyone had fun. I saw people talking to each other who NEVER talked be fore. And we were all so, so, glad we did this, because 3 days later was the 9/11 attacks. To have that time with each other so fresh in our minds definitely helped me. /soapbox Go to all the events, and have fun. You never know who you might connect with, and maybe once other people hear you are going, they'll want to attend as well. |
Go and enjoy yourself. Like 33 girl, I went to my reunion in 2001. It was a nice lunch and a great opportunity to reconnect.
I think that most grudges disappear as time passes. "What's her name" probably doesn't even remember what happened. |
Go! You will regret it if you don't
|
You should definitely go to the reunion.

From another reunion planner...
33girl is totally right. I planned our 5 year this spring (oh my gosh was that difficult!) and it was an amazing event. Yes it was only 5 years, but we brought our alumnae back, most for the first time since they graduated and they had a wonderful time. People with drama really did put it away, and the stuff that could be put away, was at least muted because there were so many people. Out of 35 alumnae 25 came back, one even from Japan. You will also get to meet the actives, and alumnae you didn't know. The tough part about a young chapter, I'm talking about the women from founders to about 5-6 years after installation, is that there is still so much to do. A chapter is not created in a short period of time, and people hold on to certain items/traditions that may not end up working (and we had lots) then you get the resentment for changing, but all in all, the reunion brought it all together and let everyone see what they created or are a part of. It was amazing and I think that you should really just do it. If it is too horrible, leave early, say you had an emergency, but you'll never know till you go.
sorry for meandering thoughts :) |
I've made my decision... and booked my hotel room.
Now, if I can only manage not to forget my camera... |
Good, hope you enjoy yourself!
