Mixers with the military?

One of my sisters just sent me this article . It's about Zeta Tau Alpha having a mixer with Marines in Jacksonville, NC. I thought it was interesting :)

What a lovely article. It's nice to see the Camp Lejeune boys in a positive light and it's even more wonderful to see them having fun -- Jacksonville's not really your sunshine and roses kind of town. ;)

I know of my own sorority sisters who were heavily involved with the USO during WWII, and it's great to see those parties come back! I've always been a sucker for stuff from that era -- the whole soldier boy heading off to war scene always gets to me.

My junior year the guy I was dating at that time was in the Coast Guard. For some reason the whole chapter started dating more and more guys from USCGC Rush. It wasn't a structured mixer like how it was mentioned in the article, but their captain always joked that we should have had Spring Formal aboard the ship.

Its a great idea from the USO's point of view. Soldiers want women, and inviting a sorority chapter is an easier way to supply them than most.

Interesting, and sounds like they had fun. When I was an undergraduate, my girls only residence hall had a dance with the guys from military college that was also in town. Unfortunately, all the guys who came were 18 years old and showed up only because they're underage and couldn't get into the clubs (drinking in Ontario is 19).

Good for ZTA!

cool....sounds like a great idea!

Rio_Kohitsuji 09-28-2004 09:22 AM

That sounds really cool :)

I know that we used to do mixers w/the ROTC guys here back in the day.

I am just picturing the horror that would be doing this with the VMI cadets next door!

Good for ZTA, but it seems that there'd be some risk management issues involved unless you treaded very carefully.

that was a cute article!

it made my smile for the day...:D

My brother in law is a VMI grad and he is *quite* impressed with himself. Is that a typical trait?

Do share. What would be the source of the horror?

YES!! I'd say so.

Many of them either don't care about or don't know how to treat ladies well. I think it's a big problem for them because they're so secluded on campus and then when they do get to come out they just act... er.... not nicely. I have had to deal with VMI cadets who have caused massive sketchiness and alcohol problems before and it's not fun.

Don't get me wrong--my big sister just married a VMI alum and I love Andy. He's a great guy, and there are definately super sweet cadets out there. There are other of my sisters who date and have married cadets as well. I've just had one too many sisters treated like absolute shit by cadets. It's such a confined place and I think they really start to lose touch with the real world, honestly.

LOL :D

I have spent many years of my life in Jacksonville, so I can attest to this comment. In fact, my parents just moved from there. It's all military and since my Dad retired he wanted to get away from it.

This was such a great idea!
A big OOO-RAH to ZTA! ;)

Amen. When I was there for two weeks this summer I couldn't help but get that "caged" feeling. You know things are bad when people use the Super Wal-Mart to pick up people!

Jacksonville's not your typical tourist destination, figures I did it for a guy. ;)

Wow. Ironic given that the campus culture supposedly makes such a big deal about honor and discipline.
