Does the internet make you paranoid?
On GC alone there are some scary people. On other websites there are even more scary people.....has anyone viewed random (not GCers) live journals and live journal interests? You will find some TRULY disturbing things.
I've learned not to take people at face value a long time ago...but after reading some things on the web within the last few years, I trust people even less. Weirdos being on the internet doesn't freak me out so much as that these weirdos aren't always behind their computer! Dude, the people we interact with everyday can be one of those weirdos on the internet! That scares me shitless! I read an article a year or so ago about internet trolls, it said the majority of them live normal lives and are productive members of society. I will try to find that link. And when I say "weirdos" I don't only mean people who are a little strange (like me, lololol), I mean psychos, stalkers, racists, pervs, evil people, etc. |
It doesn't make me paranoid, just a little more cautious.
I don't mind people knowing who I am....I mean heck, in terms of the kind of work that I am doing/hoping to do, it behooves me to be "public." What I am cautious about after a few years of being on the internet is not revealing information in terms of my whereabouts.....like, knowing how lax security is in the places I like to visit, yeah, I've definitely had fears that someone could just roll up on me and shoot me. That's why in my blog, I use my real name, but never mention my specific place of employment, nor do I mention where I will be going for the weekend. People really are crazy out there, and what bothers me most is liars....pathological liars..... I've met great people on the internet, including my web designer who is a good friend to me. A lot more good people that psychos....but oh lord, the psychos have been REALLY psycho.... |
When the "Eta Omicron Tau" rating community on LJ was going off, I was shocked as to how many little girls were obsessed with their weight. They prided themselves on being anorexic and belonged to their respective anorexic communities.
Mary Kate and Ashley were their heroes...their layouts were reflective of that. I know I'm on many GC shitlists, and I'm just afraid that psycho GCers will post my contact info...you know, since it's already been done in the past (not my info, somebody else's) . |

no not really...just very cautious. you can find nut cases everywhere. but the anonymous state of the net can make those a little off a bit more dangerous.

I was internet-stalked (if that's even a word?) by people from this one website. I don't remember what it's called. They got my screen name and email address from my Livejournal, went to my AOL homepage and stole pictures from it and posted it into their sick little forum (also run by vBulletin or whatever... same format as GC). They were harassing me on my AIM name and at first I didn't know where any of it was coming from, so finally someone from the forum im'd me and told me. I was seriously shocked about how much of my information they posted about me. I took down my pics from my AOL page and started locking my Lj.... they even reposted some of my stuff.

I get a lil freaked out by it. I try not to put too many personal things online.
What I get scared about the most is getting viruses. My bf knows a lot about comps, so he's very careful about the security and not getting viruses. |
It's sad when you're harassed & threatened by people who are supposed to be your friends. When you find out, it's humiliating & makes you angry.

Ummm I'm not scared of anyone specific on the internet either, just more weary of people on the internet and IRL.
