Do You Invest?

I bought this book "Girl, Make Your Money Grow" by by Glinda Bridgforth and Gail Perry-Mason. I've decided to start making a list of companies that I'd like to invest in. Anyone else currently investing?? No time like the present.

The only investing I do right now is the 401k I had through my old company. I need to do a better job because I want some money in my pocket after I've retired.

Like many folk, I only invest in my 401k. Everyone tells me I should use my money more wisely but the problem is, where do you find the money? There is alot bills to be paid, etc. I want to invest and save but right now its not in the cards.

Advice I have been given is that until you are getting all of your employer contribution you should not be investing in other areas. In other words, if you company matching 50% of every dollar you contribute, up to a max of 3% of your salary (like my company), you shouldn't be investing other places until you are contributing at least 6% of your salary. This does not include "emergency fund" money, which should be 3 - 6 months of your salary.

I give myself a 401k "increase" every time I get an increase at work. Even if I only increase it 1%, every little bit helps, especially if you are young.

The only investing that I do outside of my 401K is 2 mutual funds that we have. Investing in individual stocks is too risking (and calls for too much $$) for my little pennies, so I just stay with what I have. I would like to do more one day though.

I bet you, like many people (me included) waste more money than you are aware of. Do you have a budget? Do you stick to it? How much of your budget is a need vs. a want (it's easy to get the 2 confused!)?
