Hey Sorors and Sisterfriends:

I was wondering if anyone reads Oprah's "O" Magazine. If not, then why?

Also, what are some magazines that you enjoy reading. I LOVE to read magazines that enlighten and uplift us as Black women and was wondering if anything else is out there besides Ebony,Essence, Jet (all of which I love).

I don't read O because I don't like Oprah, and I think the market is saturated.

I LOVE B. Smith, used to read Emerge(when will THAT drama be settled?), like American Heritage... read Essence.

And, occasionally pick up Code.

I have bought one copy of "O," and I did not really like it. In my opinion, It is not designated specifically for women of color, but just for women in general. There are more white women and white products in the magazine than any other race. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/frown.gif

Does anyone have any comments on the latest article about/to Lil' Kim? http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif I think the author made some good points.

I subscribe to Essence, Glamour, Working Mother and Parenting among others. Essence is where I go for my soul and Glamour keeps me in the company of the "mainstream" without having to get too personal.

I have read "O" and have many feelings about it. I had hoped Oprah would focus on women of color but because that is her personality, she does not. I do, however, find that her articles pertain to almost everyone and she features ALL ethnic backgrounds in her articles and photo layouts. I won't subcribe but I will pick it up from time to time.

BTW, I am NOT an Oprah fan, but I respect her media efforts.

I can do without her TV show that's for sure. Her magazine, I enjoy. I will read my Essence first, but I find that the Ebony/Jet magazines really lack a lot of substance. They are more like reports and that's cool, but I need to know some other "stuff."

Perhaps because I am a health and fitness fanatic, I have repeatedly had to turn to more "mainstream" perodicals for information. Black maazines just DO NOT offer that...

I, too will pick up B. SMith and check out the content.

I NEED to feel uplifted when I put the magazine down and only a couple of magazines do that. Essence is one, "O" is another, I like Code (the men are usually yummy) but the women inevitably will be photographed with their legs open or in some other compromising-looking posititons (but that tends to be what men's magazines are about).

I haven't read Oprah's "O" Magazine, either. It seems as though it's getting mixed reviews. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif I will have to check it out and see for myself.

I finally got around to getting a subscription to Essence, which I love. I find that it, unlike Ebony or Jet, has a lot of useful articles and helpful tips that help in my everyday life.

I don't know if anybody has read "Honey" before, but it's not bad. Not quite as useful as Essence, but entertaining and nice to look at. http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/cool.gif It's a fairly young publication, and I am looking forward to seeing what they will do it the future. Oh yeah! I do read Heart&Soul magazine too. Good fitness tips. It's great to see a fitness magazine especially for us.

Hopeful Prospective:

I read the Lil' Kim article, and I, too, think that Joy Duckett Cain (the author) made some good points. However, it's hard to read Kim sometimes and figure out where she's coming from. I wouldn't say that Lil' Kim is bad across the board. That article made me think. I haven't come to a final conclusion yet.

I've read Oprah's magazine and I really don't feel good or bad about it.. It was a nice change from the other magazines that I read and there were some BADDDDDD boots in there anyway the articles were alot deeper then some of the other things I have run across. I also read VIBE, ESSENCE, EBONY, Black Enterprise, and Consumer Reports on a regular as I can basis.. hehe BTW what is CODE? who publishes it? where can I get a copy? I've never seen it before..or maybe I have and didn't pay attention.

Okay, I am a bit mixed about the Kim article. I was glad that it was addressed, though, because sometimes Essence seems a little "starry eyed" and validates everything under the sun. I never disliked Kim, being a product of her environment, but I sure as HECK hate the message she sends. But then I'd have to attack most of hip hop on those grounds.

Do y'all get as tired as I do, turning on the radio to be dissed by my own people? I just feel old school. I just get tired of misogyny being big bucks business, and going to the clubs and seeing us dance to songs that ask "What these B****** Want?"

But, back to the mags: Code can be found just about everywhere here in MO, probably in all big cities- I even found a great issue at the airport: Prince! The women's pictorials and some of the columnists are minuses, but I like what they're trying to do. SO much better than EM.

I only read Jet when of my friends has been mentioned (they LOVE writing into Jet about their weddings! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/eek.gif ). I read Black Enterprise occasionally. And I LOVE ESPN the Magazine; I am going to use it to bribe my tutees this semester.

I just had to post. Salience, I definitely feel you on the music thing. There is so little positive stuff out there. I get thoroughly peeved watching videos with 101 miscellaneous girls...it's so pitiful!! I wish that people could explore more with their music.

I was just wondering if the interest in the mentioned magazines were still the same...

What magazines do you read now-a-days?

Of course my top 3 are JET, Ebony and Essence. Simply because I grew up reading them.

I used to be a hair magazine fanatic but the prices have become a little too extreme. I think BLACKHAIR is almost 6 bucks now!!

Another favorite of mines is LUCKY. It's like a shopping tip magazine. (Clothes, shoes, bags, make up...) I'm into fashion so I often rip pages out and go to different thrift stores and flea markets to copy the outfit the cheap way...

They have a daughter magazine coming out called Domino which is kind of like LUCKY but geared towards the home. Can't wait for the first issue.

I have a subscription to Essence (my momma is gonna be in the December issue!) and want to get one to Black Enterprise.

I sometimes read O and I LOVE Real Simple and In Style.

I suscribe to both! Domino is really good. I have gotten lots of good ideas for my home :D

So on top of Lucky and Domino, I read:
Essence
Glamour
Cosmopolitan (both U.S. and U.K.)

I recently purchased a copy of "Domino" November 2005 issue and enjoyed it. I like the tips and suggestions of decorating your home :cool:

I also purchased "Cosmopolitan Style" Fall 2005 issue. I enjoyed this one as well! There were tips on make-up (especially about how to decorate and make your eyes stand out), mostly fashion, and hair styles, etc. There were some articles that made me bust out laughing. One article I enjoyed reading was "Confessions of a Celeb Makeup Artist." The last page asked for the reader's opinion, so I am doing that online now. Good job Cosmo Style! :D
