Founding Dates

Hey Ladies, I need your help. I am trying to put together a list of the oldest locals out there. Preferrably pre-1920s. If you can email me (kappa@iit.edu) your school, name, founding date and url if you have one that would be super! Pass this along to any of your friends, too! Fell free to tell me about other locals on your campus, too. Thank you so much!

Yours,
Theresa Allen

I -believe- the local sorority Zeta Theta Chi (who orginally was Zeta Chi) was founded in 1913 at the University of Rio Grande. They did a merger with another group (Zeta Theta) back in the 50's. I'll have to check to be certain.

My sorority, Tau Delta of Otterbein College, claims 1915 or 1921 as our founding date. We started as a "social club" because greek organizations were not allowed. I think 1921 is what we tell most people.

This is just a brief list of some local sororities founded before 1920. There are more out there, but I don't have information on the others.

1853 - Phi Nu - MacMurray College
1879 - Theta Epsilon Nu - Centenary College
1889 - Willard - Nebraska Wesleyan University
1890 - Kappa Gamma Chi - Emerson College
1895 - Tau Delta Gamma - Luther College
1896 - Theta Pi Gamma - Beloit College
1897 - Sigma Phi Nu - Eastern Michigan University
1897 - Sigma Psi - Case Western Reserve University
1901 - Delta Omicron Tau - Occidental College
1904 - Alpha Kappa Delta - Pacific University
1904 - Phi Lambda Omicron - Pacific University
1904 - Tau Mu Tau - Gustavus Adolphus College
1905 - Alpha Lambda Phi Alpha - Occidental College
1905 - Sigma Sigma - Hope College
1907 - Phi Sigma Tau - Doane College
1908 - Gamma Phi Iota - Doane College
1910 - Delta Delta Pi - Eureka College
1910 - Delta Phi - Hope College
1911 - Gamma Delta - Illinois College
1912 - Tau Epsilon Mu - Otterbein College
1913 - Philathelian - Heidelberg College
1914 - Zeta Tau Zeta - Occidental College
1916 - Sigma Phi Epsilon - Illinois College
1917 - Omega Psi Theta - Doane College
1917 - Theta Nu - Otterbein College
1918 - Alpha Chi - Cal State Chico
1919 - Lambda Delta Sigma - Concordia College
1919 - Sigma Iota Beta - Hope College

Interesting, Beta, I go to Otterbein and I've never heard of Theta Epsilon Nu...unless it's present name is Pi Beta Sigma, which claims to be the oldest local fraternity. I'll have to hunt through a yearbook!

haha, I live across the street from the Tau Epsilon Mu house, and Theta Nu is up the street. Also, Sigma Alpha Tau of Otterbein College claims 1910 as their founding date, I believe. Again, TD claims 1915 or 1921.

Incidentally, where did you find all that info?

Go Otterbein for having old greeks!

OrigamiTulip 09-22-2004 04:29 PM

Whoops! Sometimes my fingers get ahead of my brain. :) Theta Epsilon Nu is actually at Centenary College, not Otterbein. I've fixed it on the list.

All that info came from the sororities webpages. I know that there are more locals that are pre-1920, but a lot of them don't have websites up....

YAY Thanks for including us! (Phi Nu) Although it is MacMurray College, not University. I would like to mention though we have another sorority that re-established itself on our campus, however they do not have greek letters. Belles Lettres was formed I BELIEVE the year before us which would be 1852 for them but they disbanded. They just returned to our campus last year and it's really nice to have another legit group on campus so please include them in your list.

The oldest surviving local fraternity is Lambda Iota. It was founded in 1836 at the University of Vermont.

Nu Sigma Chi was organized on november 11, 1928...

Just found this thread... Phi Lambda Omicron was actually founded in 1871 at Pacific University.

Alpha Chi at Chico State is now affiliated with Alpha Phi.

No, Majority of them did decide to go Alpha Phi, a few stayed Alpha Chi and they still exist as an unrecognized sorority.
