UNC Pembroke - My Buddy's Recruitment

I've mentioned in a few places before that I have a friend at UNC Pembroke who is a non-traditional student (Married, over 30, with children) who was interested in pursuing membership in an NPC sorority.

Informal recruitment started there this past Tuesday and was nearly rained out because of the floods. There are two NPC houses on the Pembroke campus, and I'll just call them Josephine and Daphne, from the movie "Some Like It Hot".

FIRST NIGHT

Josephine
This is the chapter my friend really wanted from the beginning. She was impressed with the national organization, and she'd met members throughout her time at Pembroke. We also have an old friend from high school who pledged Josephine her first year at College, and she had great memories of her time as a collegian. She thought she made some good connections with the Josephines. She was going to register for formal recruitment last spring but missed the deadline. Going into the process, Josephine was her favorite, but I told her to be sure to keep an open mind.

She approached a couple of Josephine members the day of Informal recruitment and she was disappointed to find that they were kind of closed off to her. She didn't let that deter her, however, and she went to their first event, a pool party (that was rained out). She said that whatever connection she felt with them last year wasn't really there, and while she really respected the organization as a whole, she didn't feel as if she was among her future "sisters".

Daphne
My friend really liked the members of this organization that she knew from classes and around campus, but leading up to IR she wasn't completely sold on the sisterhood. The philanthropy matches very well with her area of study and future career, so she respected the work they did in that area. She went to their event (another rained out pool party) and she said from the moment she walked in the room, they made her feel at home. She said they're a very "huggy" chapter, and she liked that the members ranged the spectrum from stereotypical sorority girl to more mature sisters who, like her, returned to school after taking time out for their families. She felt so at home here that she completely changed her mind on who was her favorite - now the Daphnes had pulled ahead!

SECOND NIGHT
My friend decided not to go back to Josephine. I couldn't believe it!

Daphne
The sisters were supposed to go skating, but (again) the event was rained out. Instead they made cards and did crafts in support of their philanthropy, and my friend said that even if Daphne didn't give her a bid, she would always feel connected to the women in this chapter. She knew that by the time they sang their closing song that she had found her home -- she only hoped that they felt the same way!

THIS MORNING - BIDS DAY
Bids were posted at 9:00 am, but my friend was in class until 10. The president of the Daphnes was in her class and asked her if she'd gone up to see the bids yet, but when my friend answered no, she tried to cover her tracks. ;)

On her way to the student union, she ran into another one of the Daphnes who walked with her to the student union. If that wasn't a dead giveaway, I don't know what is. Now my friend is a proud member of.....

Wait for it........

SIGMA SIGMA SIGMA!

I'm so happy for her I almost screamed - but she called me at work, so I couldn't.

Congratulations to my friend, and congratulations to TRI SIGMA on getting such a fantastic new member -- who already has three little legacies!

ETA: Tri-Sigma took 5 new members during Informal Recruitment. The Josephines took 2, both of whom were legacies.
