Operationalization?

Merriam-Webster says it's not a word but my prof. keeps using it.

He got his PhD at University of Kentucky... I guess they dont have dictionaries there yet.

from dictionary.com

op·er·a·tion·al·ism n. Philosophy

The view that all theoretical terms in science must be defined only by their procedures or operations.

Perhaps something to do with this def?

I suspect that people just keep making up new stupid words.

We need to "orientate" ourselves to a new way of thinking.

Does this thread remind anyone else of that sketch on In Living Color where the inmate was had his show from prison and made up words to sound smart ?

valkyrie 09-10-2004 04:08 PM

I know you were trying to be funny, but "irregardless" is actually a word.

According to Merriam-Webster:

Main Entry: ir·re·gard·less
Pronunciation: "ir-i-'gärd-l&s
Function: adverb
Etymology: probably blend of irrespective and regardless
nonstandard : REGARDLESS
usage Irregardless originated in dialectal American speech in the early 20th century. Its fairly widespread use in speech called it to the attention of usage commentators as early as 1927. The most frequently repeated remark about it is that "there is no such word." There is such a word, however. It is still used primarily in speech, although it can be found from time to time in edited prose. Its reputation has not risen over the years, and it is still a long way from general acceptance. Use regardless instead.
