Paintings that you hate

The title is pretty self explainitory, unless you're a retard. I hate American Gothic. That painting pisses me off. Two random ass midwest people standing in front of the ugliest building I've ever seen in my life. When I was little, the guy gave me nightmares because he looks so angry. But then I thought about it, I would be angry too if I had to stand in front of some pretenious artist bastard who wanted me in front of that building. Is that a church or a house or what? I want to cut that painting with a knife, just like the Joker Gang did in Batman.

I immediately thought "Grant Wood" when I saw the thread title, b/c it's so overexposed here in the midwest (Iowa especially, him being from here).

However - what you just ranted against is also essentially the point of the painting, so at least it's effective artistically . . .

Mona Lisa....what a funny lookin broad.

Wood used his dentist and sister in the painting. There were rumors about Midwest repression and all that good stuff, but he denied it. Some have said it's about glorifying the good, some have made the satire charge, and some have said it's both.

It's currently at the Art Institute.

As something of an artist, I respect all art...but I would have to say that my least favorite painting is Munch's "The Scream." I'm really sorry one of them was stolen from that museum because it's an important piece, but it gives me the heebie-jeebies. I could not have something like that hanging in my house, because it would make me want to wet my pants every time I saw it.

I hate The Scream. Yeah, I know it's popular, blah, blah, but it's still one step from a finger painting to me.

I dislike most paintings that have people in them (the exception being that Renoir with the girl in the red hat). I don't know what it is, but I prefer outdoor scenes and animals. Most paintings of people creep me out a little.

That painting hangs in the Louvre. I was surprised at how small it is.

Anything by Jackson Pollock. It was cool for what he did, but dang, then everybody was doing it.

That's the very thing I was going to say. I expected it to be a great big thing!

I agree with the Pollack stuff.
I'm not a big fan of Monet. Doesn't do anything for me.

However, I absolutely love Van Gogh. The Starry Night is to me, the best painting ever. I even have a print in my room & a small one in my bathroom.

Gustave Courbet's "L'Origine du monde" (The Origin of the World) 1866. It was repeatedly displayed full size on a screen in a class of mine after lunch this summer and I sat in the front row. You will understand why if you click the link below.

I thought the point was to bring Gothic art/architecture to America.

I still hate that guy. Not as much as I hate Ghandi though.
