Order of Achievement / Baseball / Ferguson Jenkins

I recall reading years ago the Ferguson Jenkins was a Brother. He is in the Baseball Hall of Fame. If he is a Brother and in the Hall of Fame, why hasn't the General Fraternity acknowleged this singular accomplishment?

I realize that an honoree must agree to accept the award and that there must not be anything in his past, but if Jenkins is a Brother then I now of no reason why it should not be offered to him.

Does anyone here have some corporate knowledge on the subject? If not, I'll submit his name.

Bill Foltz

I think Bill Foltz from Illinois State can answer that, Fergie Jenkins is an initiate there. My guess is he was honorary initiated years after his baseball days.

In the early 1970's ('71, probably '72) Illinois State initiated three members of the Cubs as honoraries:

Ron Santo/B-O 106
Fergie Jenkins/B-O 107
Billy Williams/B-O 108

I'll have to get the details on how this came about from our founding father (since we only chartered in 1969 we're relatively new, although we now have 1000+).

The Paedagogus has shown photos of Brothers Jenkins and Williams because they're HOF. I also recall seeing a Cross & Crescent that had Ron Santo's photo prominently displayed.

I've never met Messrs. Jenkins & Williams. However, my bride and I did have the chance to get our photo taken w/Brother Santo at a Cubs Convention in 2001 (before his health issues caused him to lose both legs to diabetes).

When I told him I was wearing an LCA sweatshirt because I was from the ISU chapter where he'd been made an honorary, he gave me a realllllly puzzled look. Somehow I think this whole thing slipped his mind...

Three of them?

Had never heard of this before. If they're in the Baseball Hall of Fame then the Order of Achievement is more or less automatic. Wonder why it never happened?

Maybe as Honorary members they were not extended the OOA.

Tom asked whether honorary members are eligible for the Order of Achievement. Article VIII, Section 4 limits eligibility for the Order of Achievement to alumni members. However, Article VI, Section 1(d) specifically includes faculty and honorary members in the definition of alumni members. They are eligible.

For a baseball fan like me . . .

I think that somebody ought to propose Fergie; he is in the Hall of Fame and that is prima facie grounds for inclusion in the Order of Achievement, should he accept.

Personally, I'd do all three, but I don't get a vote.
