How do you feel about this?

On July 26 the University of Hawaii announced it was replacing the school's 77-year-old rainbow logo, in part because of symbol's association with the gay and lesbian community. In a bold move the university decided to drop the nickname "Rainbow Warriors" and will now be known as simply the Warriors, with an "H" as its logo.

Athletic Director Hugh Yoshida said the reasoning behind the change stemmed partly from the football players being teased by other teams. He also mentioned the rainbow being a symbol for the gay and lesbian community. His comments drew fire from gay and lesbian associations; Yoshida claimed his statements were taken out of context and that he never meant any harm, in apologizing for any misunderstandings. He reiterated the University of Hawaii's commitment to policies of diversity and inclusiveness.

The most obvious question left unanswered is why, after 77 years, has the logo been deemed inappropriate to represent the school and its football team? Are rainbows only a symbol of the gay community in today's society? Or are we becoming too homophobic to see them as representing anything else? Did the rainbow logo sway an athlete's decision on choosing to go there? Would you play for a team that was represented with a rainbow?

Carebear.

I think changing the logo is stupid. It is ashame that people are so caught up with what other people think, they can't even live their lives.

I agree that today's society is so caught up with homophobia they fail/refuse to associate the rainbow as anything else.

I would not personally let the logo of a school be my deciding factor on wether to go there or not. There are so many important things to consider.

But then again...I am a women. It seems to me that men are much more homophobic than women. They wouldn't want anything to jepordize their macho tough act. Besides 'you can't get the ladies if someone thinks your soft'! ha ha

on the whole, I do think that homophobia is not an excuse to change this logo

But personally, I have a friend who has a used car had a rainbow bumper sticker on it (just a simple rainbow)

and she was forever getting hit on by women, so it does have that symbolizum in today's world.

I think changing the logo was not smart at all. They've had the symbol for what over 70 years and homosexuality has been around a lot longer than that! If the football players are that insecure then that's their problem. I mean after they graduate who is going to know or even care that they went to the school with the rainbow symbol.

I had a rainbow air freshner in my car once and I was constantly being clowned on. All I wanted was my car to smell good, dang! Plus, I thought it was cute. It was not a statement or advertisement for lesbians because as Franki said in the movie "Set it off", I'm strictly d***ly!!!

Well personally I don't know why they (those practicing homosexuality) would chose a "rainbow" to represent them but that was their choice.

C&C1913 I can so relate to you. If any of you are aware of the "power beads" well they have them in all colors and then they have the "rainbow" colors. At the time of purchase I just liked the colors; however when I went into another store in the DC Area (forestville Mall...new edition for those DC Cats)and I had it one w/ an outfit and this guy came up grilling me talking about do I know what my bracelet meant and all that stuff...girl you just don't know how mad I was...I told him politely that I do not practice homosexuality and I'm "strictly d*c*ly". Well its not that I'm insecure about my self or sexuality however from that day I have chosen to refrain from wearing so people will not assume that I am ...you know what I mean...gay!

But anyway, girl Director http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/biggrin.gif you are going to have to stop one of these days

being a knowledge buff and expert on the gay and lesbian community! http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/wink.gif

In 1978, Gilbert Baker of San Francisco designed and made a flag with six stripes representing the six colors of the rainbow as a symbol of gay and lesbian community pride.

But the most colorful is the Rainbow Flag, and its rainbow of colors - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, and purple - represents the diversity of the gay and lesbian community.

Well I guess I shouldn't say practice ...I can see how "stupid" that sounds...what I was trying to say was that I'm not a lesbian or bisexual...so I hope that clarifies those statements for you.

Umm, how does one "practice" homosexuality? Do you eventually get good enough to stop practicing and go on to the big game? Does one "practice" heterosexuality?

Just asking....
