When Friends are Expecting a Baby?
One of my friends called today-- she's expecting!
If the baby is a girl, she will be a legacy to both Kappa (mom) and ADPi (grandmom). (The baby's two aunts are also ADPi's from my chapter!) (And if he's a boy, he will be a Beta Theta Pi legacy!) Fingers and toes crossed-- hoping, wishing and praying for a healthy little one! Anyway, any good ideas out there for baby gifts (non-Greek stuff; my friend is in her early 30's and not involved as an alum). Thanks :) They're only a few months along... is it too soon to be giving gifts? |
Oh, sweetie! It is never too early to start giving gifts! I remember the very first baby gift I was ever given... it was a pair of little baby booties from my grandmother. I've used them with all of my children and I always thought about her each time I put them on a tiny pair of feet.
A baby bib that has the name of the parent's alma mater on it would be a cute gift. A really great gift for this early in the pregnancy would be something for the mommy... a box of saltines, ginger ale, bubble bath and pretty nail polishes. Anything to help her enjoy this special, if sometimes physically uncomfortable, time. Congrats to your friend!! :D |
I would wait 'til second trimester. Most miscarriages happen in the first, and I imagine that it would suck to have a house full of teddy bears and stuff and lose the baby.
I'm a big fan of giving babies books, especially the ones that you can touch/play with. |
I love the idea of giving books for babies! Pat the Bunny is a classic. :)
I understand what you mean about most miscarriages happening in the first trimester and it being painful to have baby supplies and no baby... but I look at it this way: Babies who die before birth are often forgotten by everyone but the parents. Having a reminder helps the parents to feel that their baby was real and that other people recognize that. A gift that is a sad reminder at first might end up being a treasured memento of their child who had such a brief life. But now that I've bummed out myself and others... let me move to happier thoughts... a certificate for a prenatal massage! I would have loved one of those! :) |
Having miscarried myself, I would definitely wait until at least the second trimester!
There are really nice maternity pillows that would be a lovely gift for the mommy-to-be, as well as the massage mentioned earlier. I didn't know that I was the only one who gave books at baby showers - that's really nice to know!! I also don't believe in giving baby (up to 1 year) clothes - I go right for the 24 months or so. A friend of mine has a daughter who won't wear anything to church other than a little denim jumper I gave her, which really makes me feel good. I figured that the denim would work with a t-shirt or a sweater underneath. |
Congratulations to your friend! :)
One of my hobbies is knitting, and I have knitted baby blankets for a few friends, including one of my sorority sisters who has a darling little girl - it's her favorite blanket! :) If you have a similar hobby, perhaps you could make something for the little one. |
I saw my sister yesterday and little MFG of the 2023 pledge class of Phi Kappa Psi is doing well in her ever-expanding tummy.
His "Happy Birthing Day" presents are some baby clothes that say "Phi Kappa Psi- Pledge Class of 2023" |
I've given "The Velveteen Rabbit" as a shower gift. That's one of my all time favorites.
You might want to get a few together and chip in for a spa day that she can use after the little one arrives so she could take a break. |
My roomie from the house is 5 months PG so I think it's safe to send her a present. I really hate babies, I won't lie, so I'm trying to think of something that would be useful to send HER...what do we think?

Either a gift certificate to a spa or a "spa in a bag," with stuff she can do to make herself look and feel good during the grosser parts of pregnancy.

The book Love You Forever by Robert Munsch is my standard (but by no means boring) baby gift. It's such a touching book and it's something they'll probably still read to the baby when they're in elem. school (maybe even later). Those of you who have read it know what I'm talking about.

That book is a really good idea - I think I might have a winner. I was thinking about getting her a cute diaper bag too.
