? for greeks

some may say that greek sororities and fraternities are "high class gangs". they both wear colors, have hand signs, and initiations. what do you think?

XX1 09-29-2000 08:32 AM

you should think it over more.
so far you've come up with bullsh.t

I can see where that assumption might come from. Gangs often have symbols (like our crests, leters, mascots), they often times can be recognized by what colors they wear (so can we), they meet and have 'secret' rituals/stuff (so do we). However, I really have to say that even though some of the things about gangs and greek organizations might be similar, we have very different purposes and accomplish totally different goals and ideals. THAT is what separates us.

XX1, try to show a little respect. The person was asking a simple question. All it needed was a simple answer. If you disagree with the statement, try saying why and explaining yourself. That might help.

I second that motion mgdzkm433.

"the thinker", so you are saying that because
WE wear assembled colors, have hand signs,
and meet in secret WE can be thought of as a gang. C'mon, even Boy and Girl Scouts have assembled colors, hand signs and meet in a camp. Yes, my approach to this question may be hilarious, but don't misunderstand me if you think this is not a serious matter. There are other reasons I could name that would cause one to think that frats and soroities are org. gangs, but I want go there. The main points that causes US to be separate from a gang have been mentioned by Mandingo and M433
(Sorry I'd forgotten your full username M433)
anyways, If you're still wondering,I suggest you ask a member of each org. of NPHC and feel their defintion.

I don't recall seeing gangs doing community service activities, holding forums on campuses, or putting on educational programs for the betterment of the community as a whole.

I think that we are all human beings - gang members, Greeks, everyone. As such, we have a natural need to affiliate with others. This need is instinctive and psychological, and has existed since the beginning of time.

Some of us choose to do it by aligning ourselves with groups that have worth and tradition and social value and concern for others.

Others choose to do it for lesser reasons.

The existence of this need does not equate fraternities and sororities with gangs... it only serves to exemplify that we are all put on this Earth in the same way with the same needs. It is only how we choose to gratify those needs that makes us different.

I can understand your point but then again I don't know many gangs that are involved with charity work & scholastic achievement that adhere to a set of strict values and principles http://www.greekchat.com/forums/ubb/smile.gif

Obviously this person is not greek. In school we were always taught that no question is a stupid one. Unfortunately that one was. That goes beyond interest to common sense. I can't remember the last time that my sorors and I did a drive-by because another org. dissed us in a show.
