Do YOU make a difference
in your community - if so, what do you do as a group or individual.
|
Well, first and foremost...I make a difference in my community through my membership in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Incorporated.
Secondly, I'm the vocational coordinator for a domestic violence program. So, I make a difference everyday I go to work. |

Through my church, we donate food to the needy and help with the elderly. I also am planning to get my 9 year old daughter started in her community service "outreach". My desire is to begin visiting nursing homes a couple of hours a week just to sit with the elderly to talk. Many of them are placed in these "homes" and forgotten. I love being around older folks because there is so much wisdom there. I want her to have this same love and appreciation, so we will begin our visits soon. |
I actively chose to substitute teach at the elmentary school in my neighborhood.
I donate books to my neighborhood library. I also try to recruit young men from the neighborhood high school to our Beautillion, but with high turnover among the counselors and a principal who never returns calls..... |
I try to make a difference through....
-service to my church as a trustee -coaching youth basketball in city-wide church league -past coordinator of our frat chapter's food drive -Project Alpha mentor (program works w/ male youth) -active in our chapter's voter registration/get-out-the-vote efforts. -Alpha Claus Elf (annually Alpha Claus visits children in the minority areas of our city. The elfs keep order, pass out candy and get mama's phone numbers for Santa.... just kiddin'.) -mentoring "bruhs" on the yard -member of our chapter's Housing Corp. board -chapter representative to city's Pan-Helenic council -exhibiting manly deeds, scholarship and love for all mankind. |
I am active in
-Alpha -House of Restoration- this is a group of 5 people and we have successfully had 2 Youth Conferences in summer 2003 and 2004 -I'm the financial secretary at my church -Voter registration drive with Alpha and NAACP -I'm in charge of Project Alpha in October so.. brothers please pray for me.. -Advisor in my church youth department for the 14-19 yr olds |
Re: A difference
Hotep Brothers. The BLACKMAN makes a difference wherever he is. The difference is either operative and (+)/speculative(-) or subjective(+/-).

Bro. Ali Made a Difference!
Hotep Brothers. I am mourning the loss of a dear Brother of OURS. I cannot state for the record whether those who I do not know are making a difference, but I can truly state for the record that a difference was truly made by OUR ALPHA BROTHER DEREK ALI (Dayton, Ohio) whose life was taken away by an act of stupidity just a few days ago (9-5-04). I am sure that a number of you perhaps share my same sentiments. Ptah-Hope.

When I was in 6-8th grade my school [catholic school, so they could organize it] had a program w/ a local organization that took a group of us kids to a nursing home. We would talk to the residents, play games with them [bingo!], paint the ladies fingernails for the holidays, do art projects. It was a challenging but rewarding experience. I admire your plan. If you want to discuss any of the specifics of the program I was involved with, feel free to PM me. Good Luck :D |
