A GC Hypothetical

Let's say that there is someone who posts on a message board, perhaps a message board just like GC. As is often the case when posting on message boards, over time she gets close to some of the other people who post there. What nobody realizes at first, however, is that her entire identity is a lie. She's a fake. She's not who she says she is -- she uses a fake name and pretends to belong to an organization when in reality she does not. She even posts fake pictures.

All is well in her pretend world for a while, but eventually people start to catch on to the lies. Her lies were pretty big and looking back on it, easily discoverable. Eventually she is "outed" and everybody finds out the truth. Some people are hurt because she lied to them for so long and they trusted her. Some people feel sorry for her, and some are angry. Nobody really understands why she created a fake internet identity and played it off for so long. Once it's all out in the open, she vanishes. I mean really, what else could she do?

But does she really vanish? Not in our little hypothetical. A mere three days after vanishing, she starts posting again on the message board, under a different name. She makes no reference to her previous identity. This time she claims to be from a different school. She's learned from her mistakes the first time and reveals much less information about herself, but again pretends to belong to an organization to which she does not in fact belong. She's much more quiet about it this time, but people can't be fooled all of the time, especially not people who have suspected that she was still around. Eventually, someone figures out that she is in fact the same person -- that the person who created an entire fake identity to use while posting on a message board and got caught actually came back and created an entirely different fake identity to post on the same message board.

What would you think of that?

That this hypothetical person with multiple identities needs some not so hypothetical help.

For those of you confused,
MULLET=IOWAHAWKEYE.

This has not been created to be dramatic or start shit...she has posted pics in the GC album, as mullet, and started this online journal with completely different pics. NEITHER OF THESE TWO GIRLS IS TRULY HER...LAST YEAR WE SAW THE REAL PIC OF HER, AND ONE OF US HAS MET HER IN REAL LIFE.

Why are you being directed to that diary? Because I POSTED THAT in my lj, on April 7th. Click here to see.

Among other things, her location in the journal is Iowa City, IA- just like IHE. Her home location is Chicago, IL (YAY NOW I CAN BE STALKED!!!)- just like IHE. Remember when she impersonated her sister? She's blond and skinny...just like whatever poor girl's pics are all over her blog. Her name isn't registered with the chapter and sorority she is so secretive of, yet told some of us. There is no way this is a mistake.

So she is impersonating at least three people, myself being one of them. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE be careful you guys...we thought she was in the H&A, and a few of us busted her out last year the first time. She even fooled us.

YOU NEVER KNOW who is on here. It is a shame to me that this psycho has now disrespected two sororities with her ridiculous behavior. I am freaked out, and it kills me that I probably shouldn't post here anymore. I am not posting this to get attention, but to call your attention to the fact that my personal safety is in danger, and yours could be, too.

AND TO YOU, LISA : I have no idea why you've done this to me, when my only interaction with you, the first time around, was proving how hurtful and misleading your actions were on GC. YOU NEED SERIOUS HELP. I almost posted your full name, address, and phone number but then realized that would be something I learned from you. What can I do about it? Probably nothing...but you will have to deal with God in the end. And that should be absolutely terrifying.

Optimist Prime 08-21-2004 04:13 AM

Is this about you or Iowa Hawkeye?

Unregistered- 08-21-2004 08:29 AM

Just a heads up to the Alpha Xis.

Mullet81 claimed to be an Alpha Xi Delta from your chapter at Indiana University.

First a Delta Zeta, then an Alpha Xi.

TEH PILLS DON'T WORK.

This is just a heads-up -- be careful who you trust on this board. So far this psycho hose beast has hurt some people I care lots about, and I have no doubt that she'll come back with another personality soon. What Big Ten schools do we not have covered on the board? Minnesota? Michigan?

I can't believe she thought she'd get away with it AGAIN.

jharb 08-21-2004 10:43 AM

Look what I miss when I get drunk.

People need to get off the interweb if they get caught impersonating another person. You shouldn't keep coming back for more, especially if you're hurting people in the process.

CarolinaCutie 08-21-2004 10:47 AM

Wow. :(

A part of me feels kinda sorry for her. She must really not like her regular self if she feels the need to pretend on GC. It's not like we would care if she wasn't blonde and beautiful. There's even plenty of people who post here who are not in GLOs. What's so bad about her normal, realistic life?

But at the same time, someone who is basically a pathological liar is not really someone who should gain any of our sympathies.

ETA: I also feel really bad for the girl who is in all of her pictures... I wonder if she realizes that putting all of those out there on the Net isn't the greatest idea?

cashmoney 08-21-2004 10:49 AM

Now how do you people really know she's a fraud? Or a Pyscho? Or that it's actually her or not her? How do you know she's not who she claims to be? I'm not trying to start up a clit fight or anything, I just remember when a lot of people thought I was crazy or a pyscho or whatever they thought (some probably still do) just because I got banned and came back with different names.

Point is, this is the internet. If you choose to get close to someone on the internet and involve them in your personal life then thats your deal. Its your own fault if you get hurt. But don't sit there and start yelling out other members names and accusing them of being someone else when there's no way for sure you actually know. I remember when people on this board thought that smiley21, cashmoney and rebelsong84 were all the same person when in fact we werent. People kept going on and on about it and it caused rebelsong84 to leave GC. We were all 3 different people but because Kaley said something about liking me....a lot of people on here thought we were all the same person.

sugar and spice 08-21-2004 10:55 AM

We have enough evidence to know that mullet is a fake, and some very strong evidence pointing towards the fact that mullet and IHE are the same person -- I would prefer that all y'all who are in the know stay quiet about the details of how we first started suspecting that they were the same girl because if IHE does decide to come back with a new personality, we can use the same method to keep tabs on her. If John or a mod would like to know, they can feel free to PM and I'm sure valkyrie/AXJules/whoever would be happy to elaborate.

John has been PMed and asked to do an IP search and at that point we'll know for sure.

Munchkin03 08-21-2004 10:59 AM

Dude, even though you've changed your name a few times (when you were banned), you've always been pretty straight up about who you are in terms of your affiliation. You never pretended to be in an organization you weren't. You weren't taking others' GC posts and fobbing them off as your own.

Mullet/IowaHawkeye did. In other organizations' boards, a "perp" would be banned from the board automatically. Others would be notified of their behavior. It's the intarweb, sure...but lying about your Greek affiliation on a Greek board is pathetic.

HotDamnImAPhiMu 08-21-2004 01:31 PM

I think I'm missing something.

Obviously it's *not* cool for someone to pretend to be a part of an org. they're not a member of -- twice -- but why is everyone so stressed out over this specific case?

We've had PNMs claim to have gotten bids from orgs (but didn't), trolls who seem to have nothing better to do than cause trouble on internet boards, and GLO members who weren't.

Why not just "out" the person and leave it at that?

I guess I don't understand why tracking the IP address is necessary. Plus it sounds like it'll be difficult/impossible, depending on what ISP they're using.

Not if they use any ISP which uses a proxy e.g. AOL. Which'd mean thousands of people sharing same IP address/block.

Also not if their ISP assigns dynamic IP addresses meaning a new IP address every time they sign on.

Also not if they use an anonymous proxy as many people at work do to get around filters, which means their IP address doesn't point to them.

Either way it doesn't matter because it has been verified.

pip pip!
